Overview

Antoni Next To Kate Beckinsale And Pete Davidson Kissing is a candid press photograph taken at a New York Rangers hockey game showing three celebrities in wildly different emotional states. On the right side of the frame, actress Kate Beckinsale and comedian Pete Davidson are kissing with tongue, and directly to their left sits Queer Eye food expert Antoni Porowski wearing an expression of stunned discomfort1.

The image took off as a reaction shot for anyone who identifies with Antoni's awkward third-wheel energy, and it also became fodder for object labeling jokes where the three faces get relabeled to represent different scenarios2. Elle's coverage summed up the appeal by describing Antoni as looking like a kid brother who wandered into a high school party with too many questions3.

2019

The photograph was taken on March 3rd, 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York City during a game between the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals1. Beckinsale and Davidson had been publicly linked earlier in the year after being spotted at a Golden Globes afterparty in January and later holding hands following one of Davidson's stand-up shows2.

Porowski happened to be seated next to the couple, and photographers captured the moment Beckinsale and Davidson began making out in the stands while Antoni sat frozen beside them3.

How It Spread

The photo hit Twitter on March 4th, 2019 and users immediately zeroed in on Porowski's reaction rather than the couple1. Elle writer R. Eric Thomas published a piece with the headline "I'm an Antoni in a World of Kissing Kates and Petes," cementing the third-wheel framing early on3.

On Twitter, user @managewski called Antoni "a big third-wheeling mood," pulling in over 540 retweets and 4,600 likes, while @SophLouiseHall joked that Antoni was wondering whether avocado could help him, a nod to the running Queer Eye gag about his fondness for avocados1. The object labeling wave followed quickly, with @DanaSchwartzzz's edit clearing 110 retweets and 1,100 likes1.

Mainstream outlets like BuzzFeed also folded the moment into their coverage of the Beckinsale and Davidson relationship, giving the image reach beyond meme circles2.

How to Use This Meme

The template typically uses the three figures as object labels. Kate and Pete on the right stand in for two things happily paired up or getting along, and Antoni on the left is labeled as whoever or whatever is stuck watching from the sidelines. It also works as a straight reaction image for third-wheel situations, awkward PDA, or feeling out of place at an event1.
