In 1991, James released his first EP Analogue Bubblebath as The Aphex Twin, with later re-issues crediting the record to AFX5. His first full-length album, Selected Ambient Works 85-92, dropped on February 12th, 1992 and set the template for the ambient techno sound the project became known for. Follow-ups Selected Ambient Works Volume II (1994), ...I Care Because You Do (1995), and the Richard D. James Album (1996) built out his catalog through the mid-90s.

How It Spread

Aphex Twin broke into mainstream awareness in 1997 with the Come to Daddy EP, pitched as a parody of death metal rock. Chris Cunningham directed the music video that same year, a body-horror clip in which twitching child figures wear James's face6. Cunningham directed a second Aphex Twin video for "Windowlicker" in 1999, and the single peaked at #16 on the UK Singles Chart, still the project's highest-charting song. Cunningham later scored his short films FLEX (2000) and Rubber Johnny (June 20th, 2005) with James's music.

Fan communities showed up early online. A Facebook page went live on November 3rd, 20073, the @AphexTwin Twitter account launched in August 20101, and the /r/aphextwin subreddit opened on May 19th, 20112. In April 2014, a Kickstarter campaign for the unreleased Caustic Window LP pulled in more than 4,100 backers and $67,424, with the sole physical copy later auctioned on eBay and bought by Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson4.

The 2014 comeback rollout was pure Aphex Twin theatre. A green blimp printed with the project's logo and the date "2014" appeared over London on August 16th1. Two days later, @AphexTwin tweeted a link to a Tor site that unveiled the tracklist for Syro, which came out on September 19th, 2014 and won the 2015 Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
