A quote spoken by the character Wamuu in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure as he rouses his fellow Pillar Men, 'Awaken, My Masters' began circulating among manga readers in the late 2000s before exploding when the 2013 anime adaptation paired the moment with the booming 'Pillar Men Theme'. By 2014, Tumblr and YouTube were full of hype-rap remixes layering Lil Jon over the song, and the awakening tableau later turned into fan art swapping the Pillar Men for Five Nights at Freddy's animatronics and Ed, Edd n Eddy.

Overview

The line works as a signal flare: posters drop 'Awaken, My Masters' whenever they want to introduce something imposing, from a boss fight entrance to a group photo of friends looking menacing. Early uses leaned on the quote alone as a catchphrase in forum threads and image macros2, but the 2013 anime episode welded the words to the thunderous 'Pillar Men Theme' and turned the whole scene into a copypasta of sorts for audio-visual edits3.

The two most common formats are musical mashups and redrawn tableaux. Remix videos splice the song's horn-and-chant intro with hip-hop drops so the beat lands exactly as Wamuu finishes the line1. Fan artists, meanwhile, recreate the pose of the three Pillar Men standing in sunbeams while a fourth figure kneels in the foreground, then swap the characters for other franchises45.

The scene comes from chapter 64 of Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, published March 28th, 1988, in the Battle Tendency arc3. Nazi soldiers surround the dormant Pillar Men hoping to control them; Wamuu wakes first, kills the guards, and uses the quote to rouse Esidisi and Kars6. Early mentions of the moment inside the JoJo fandom date back to a 4chan thread archived on February 21st, 20082.

The quote crossed into wider meme circulation after January 11th, 2013, when episode 14 of the Part 2 anime aired on Tokyo MX and set the awakening to a track titled 'Awake', better known as the 'Pillar Men Theme'3. YouTube uploads of the dubbed scene gave later editors a clean audio bed to sample from7.

How It Spread

Music remixing drove the first big wave. On May 15th, 2014, Tumblr user BotanicSage posted 'Pillar Men Hype Theme', layering the song over Lil Jon tracks including 'Turn Down For What' and 'Snap Your Fingers'; the Tumblr post collected more than 5,600 notes, and the YouTube mirror reached roughly 567,000 views by August 201521. On June 5th, 2015, YouTuber kanashiipanda uploaded a My Little Pony: Equestria Girls animation set to the awakening cue, which pulled close to 2.5 million views within two months8.

Fan art ran in parallel. DeviantArt user DragonKion posted 'The Animatronics' on February 17th, 2015, redrawing the awakening with Five Nights at Freddy's characters replacing the Pillar Men1. Tumblr user Jasinator followed on August 8th, 2017, with an Ed, Edd n Eddy version titled 'awaken oh ed boys'1. Both pieces preserve the original composition so the reference reads instantly to anyone who has seen the episode.

The quote also stuck around as a shorthand for epic entrances in JoJo reaction threads and compilation videos through the late 2010s910.
