Overview

Bold Of You To Assume is a snowclone6 that took off on Tumblr, where the sarcastic reply denies something obviously true about the speaker4. The line that made the format viral came from user draeneis, whose reply 'bold of you to assume I have blood' was aimed at people who missed the joke on an earlier post about Coca-Cola dissolving rust2.

The deadpan self-deprecation matches Tumblr's habit of turning ordinary questions into existential punchlines. The original chain started as a punchy jab at pop health advice1, and by 2018 screenshots of the posts had drifted beyond Tumblr onto Reddit and Twitter3.

The template traces back to Tumblr user draeneis, whose October 10, 2017 post mocked the claim that Coca-Cola dissolves rust with 'imagine what its doing to your body'1. On March 20, 2018, after several users reblogged the thread without appearing to catch the punchline, draeneis replied 'bold of you to assume I have blood,' which pulled in more than 287,000 notes2.

An earlier phrasing had already been floating around Twitter, where Dril tweeted on July 24, 2014 that it was 'awfully bold' to fly the Good Year blimp during a bad year, a post that racked up more than 24,000 retweets5.

How It Spread

On March 21, 2018, one day after draeneis' post went viral, Tumblr user zagreus posted 'awfully bold of you to assume that i was born,' earning about 33,000 notes4. On June 16, 2018, user yiffmaster shared 'bold of you to assume i have dignity,' pulling over 288,000 notes and edging past the reach of the draeneis reply2.

Screenshots of the posts drifted beyond Tumblr onto the /r/tumblr subreddit, where a September 25, 2018 crosspost climbed past 7,200 upvotes3. Twitter user @ubsticky later pulled a batch of the same Tumblr posts into a thread that got 2,100 retweets and 3,500 likes5.

By late 2018, the phrasing branched into remixes, including an alignment chart parody built around the format and a 'bold of you to assume I fear death' variant tied to Isabelle joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate4.

How to Use This Meme

Someone asks a normal question or makes a small assumption. The response opens with 'bold of you to assume' and denies something obviously true about the speaker, like being alive, feeling emotions, or possessing a body part2. The draeneis line about not having blood set the tone for how absurd the denial can go1.
