Overview

"Boom, Pregnant" is a catchphrase captioned on photos of good-looking men, most often actors and musicians1. The joke plays on the idea that seeing the pictured man is enough to cause instant pregnancy, a mock overreaction to attractiveness. It shows up as a caption on a photo, a Tumblr tag, or a reply left directly under someone's post2.

The phrase probably riffs on "Boom, Headshot!," a line popularized by web mockumentary series Pure Pwnage3. Punctuation varies wildly across uses, with commas, periods, exclamation marks and even "boom you're pregnant" all showing up as separate Tumblr tag variants2.

Before it was a thirst comment, "Boom, Pregnant" appeared literally as early as March 2007, used to describe a woman's shock at conceiving3. The reinterpretation as a caption for hot men shows up in July 2010, when a commenter on LiveJournal celebrity gossip community Oh No They Didn't (ONTD) dropped the line under a photo of Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme1.

How It Spread

Between September and December 2010, ONTD commenters recycled the phrase on three separate posts featuring British actor Tom Hardy, plus one about Chris Pine1. A Facebook fan page for the catchphrase went up in January 2011, aimed mostly at fans of British alt-rock band Muse3. That April, the caption jumped to Reddit's /r/LadyBoners on a photo of Supernatural actor Jensen Ackles4.

The format got a dedicated home on Tumblr on August 19, 2011, when a single-topic blog called "Boom Pregnant" launched with photos of male actors and musicians2. A second blog with the same name appeared in June 20122. By October 2012, Flickr returned nearly 200 results for the phrase (though some pictured actual pregnant women) and YouTube counted over 1,400 videos using the term3.

How to Use This Meme

The format is straightforward. Post a photo of someone you find extremely attractive, then caption or tag it "Boom, Pregnant," typically using whichever punctuation feels right. It's commonly posted by women reacting to male actors or musicians, and reads as a jokey admission that the pictured person is unreasonably hot.
