Overview

Breath In Boi, also called SpongeBob Boi, is a pair of image macros showing SpongeBob SquarePants clasping his hands together and leaning forward in a bow. The pictures are heavily distorted with visual corruption similar to Real Nigga Hours edits, giving the character a glitched, blown-out look popular in shitposting circles1.

The pair is deployed as a reaction to people about to make an unwise or reckless decision, with SpongeBob's bowing pose reading as ominous anticipation3. The base pose comes from an early-2000s Nick.com Flash game where SpongeBob bows before a karate match with Sandy the Squirrel2.

The base image traces back to 2003, when Nick.com released the Flash game SpongeBob Kah Rah Tay Contest, in which SpongeBob bows to Sandy the Squirrel before their karate spar. The pre-fight bow frame later became the raw material for the meme2.

The first known posting of the paired, corrupted version appeared on December 22nd, 2015 in a 4chan /fa/ thread about modified images of SpongeBob wearing boots. The post captioned the image with "WHO DIS NIKKA???"1 3.

How to Use This Meme

The typical use is a two-panel or paired reaction post, where the glitched SpongeBob bow signals that the subject is about to do something ill-advised. Creators often pair the image with a caption describing the bad idea, or drop it as a standalone reply in a thread. A common convention is to keep the visual corruption intact rather than clean the image up, since the crunchy compression is part of the joke1.
