Desu is a Japanese word turned 4chan spam meme, tied to the Rozen Maiden character Suiseiseki who ends every sentence with it.

Where did Desu come from?

It started as spam ammunition in an April 2006 4chan raid where users from the anime board /a/ retaliated against /b/.

In Japanese it's a polite copula ending statements, roughly meaning "is" or "to be".

Post a Suiseiseki image with the word repeated many times, or end English sentences with "desu" as a cutesy or ironic anime affectation.

Is Desu still popular?

The peak of desu spam was the late 2000s on 4chan, and it's now a classic weeaboo-era gag rather than an active trend, though anime fans still reference it.

Overview

Desu is the polite Japanese copula, roughly meaning "is" or "to be," normally tacked onto the end of statements in everyday Japanese speech2. Online it turned into a spam word blasted into 4chan threads, usually alongside Suiseiseki, the Rozen Maiden doll character mentioned in nearly every desu post2.

The joke cuts two ways. Anime fans posted it earnestly as a cute affectation, while others copied the style ironically to sound "cute or unwitting"2. Image macros pairing Suiseiseki's face with walls of repeated "desu desu desu" text became a fixture on /b/ and /a/, and the word's Tourette-like rhythm made it easy to bomb into any thread.

The memetic spam use of desu began in April 2006 on 4chan3. Users from the anime board /a/ launched a retaliatory raid on /b/ after /b/ had raided them first, and copy-pasted "desu" served as their weapon of choice. The earliest documented example dates to April 12, 2006. Rather than pushing back, /b/ users absorbed the gag themselves, and Suiseiseki became a recurring face on the board thanks to her verbal tic.

How It Spread

By 2007 desu had grown past raid ammunition into a full 4chan in-joke. On March 21, 2007, YouTube user ShotaFujimori uploaded "DesUltimate – 527 DEATH combo," a compilation stringing together hundreds of Suiseiseki utterances of the word, which pulled in more than 1.5 million views1.

Counter-spam grew alongside it. Threads flooded with desu often got hit back with images of Gaston from Disney's Beauty and the Beast, a running 4chan bit at the time, spawning Flash edits like "4Chan City – Craptastrophe" that mashed both sides together3.

Outside 4chan the word bled into general anime fandom slang, showing up in ironic English sentences ended with "desu" for cute or affected effect2.

How to Use This Meme

Desu posts typically pair a Suiseiseki image with the word repeated many times, or end an otherwise normal English sentence with "desu" as an anime affectation. A common convention on 4chan was to fill an entire reply with nothing but "desu desu desu" as a thread derailment tactic, often triggering a Gaston counter-spam in response.
