Gay Test is a demotivational poster format that pairs a suggestive image with a bottom caption claiming the viewer is gay if they spotted something other than the sexual content first.

Where did Gay Test come from?

The earliest known example was posted by an unknown user to the picture-sharing site Evilmilk on October 29th, 2007.

What does Gay Test mean?

The captions are not a real accusation about the viewer's orientation, they are a bait-and-switch joke made for the laughs.

How do you use Gay Test?

Users typically build one by taking a suggestive photo, hiding a small non-sexual detail in it, and captioning that detail as the thing only a gay viewer would notice first.

Is Gay Test still popular?

The format kept circulating for years after its 2007 debut, with later reposts on Reddit's /r/Animemes in 2018 and on Lolcaption in 2019.

Overview

The Gay Test is a demotivational poster format where a suggestive image sits on top and a bottom caption tells viewers that if they noticed something other than the sexual content first, they are gay 3. The gag is a bait and switch, since the "correct" thing to spot is almost always a small non-sexual detail hidden somewhere in the frame 1.

These posters follow the standard black-border demotivational style with bold white caption text at the bottom, and the humor is not intended as an actual accusation about the viewer's orientation 3. The 2000s trend should not be confused with the separate 2023 Gay Test Drawings meme 3.

The earliest known Gay Test was posted on October 29th, 2007, to the picture-sharing site Evilmilk by an unknown user 1. That original poster went on to rack up over 261,000 views on the site across roughly 13 years and was later listed among Evilmilk's "All-Time Most Viewed Funny Pictures" 1.

How It Spread

The format spread quickly across image-sharing sites and forums through the late 2000s. By December 21st, 2009, a Google search for "gay test demotivational" already pulled around 206,000 results 3. On September 18th, 2018, Redditor HILrebellion posted a fresh version to /r/Animemes that hit more than 1,500 upvotes and 69 comments within six months 2. On May 13th, 2019, another user uploaded a variant to Lolcaption under its "Funny Demotivational Posters" section 4.

The term "gay test" also picked up unrelated meanings online. Urban Dictionary entries define it as a woman attractive enough that any straight man would want her, and separately as a search phrase used by people questioning their own orientation 5.

How to Use This Meme

People typically pick a photo with obvious suggestive content, often a shot of a scantily clad or nude woman, then plant a small unusual detail somewhere in the frame 1. The bottom caption points to that detail and says something like "if you saw this first, you're gay." The joke runs on the assumption that everyone noticed the sexual content first, so the "right" answer becomes a fake accusation played strictly for laughs.
