Goncharov is a fictional 1973 Martin Scorsese mafia movie about a Russia-born mob boss, invented by Tumblr users in November 2022 as a collective unreality writing project.

Where did Goncharov come from?

It began with Tumblr user zootycoon's photo of knockoff boots whose tag named the nonexistent film; the design was later traced by user dogsuffrage to a Gomorrah (2008) poster Scorsese had lent his name to.

What does Goncharov mean?

Urban Dictionary defines Goncharov and the 'Goncharov Effect' as when a collectively imagined fictional thing is better than the real thing.

How do you use Goncharov?

By treating the film as real: posting fan posters, GIFs, fic, or lore about the shared cast (Goncharov, Katya, Andrey, Sofia) and mafia setting without breaking the fiction.

Is Goncharov still popular?

The Goncharov fandom peaked in late November 2022 when it dominated Tumblr trends and drew Martin Scorsese himself to acknowledge the invented film.

Overview

Goncharov is a fictional 1973 Martin Scorsese mafia film about a Russia-born mob boss of the same name, invented and expanded by Tumblr users during a viral wave of collective writing in November 20223. Fans built out cast lists, plot outlines, homoerotic subtext between the characters Andrey and Goncharov, fan-made posters, GIF sets, and a main theme song, all treated as if the movie truly existed2.

Urban Dictionary broadened the joke into the 'Goncharov Effect,' defined as 'when the made up thing is better than the real thing,' shorthand for elaborate collaborative unreality hoaxes4.

Some time before August 22nd, 2020, Tumblr user zootycoon posted a photograph of knockoff boots whose tag advertised a nonexistent Martin Scorsese picture called Goncharov, billed as 'the greatest mafia movie ever made'1. On October 25th, 2022, Tumblr user dogsuffrage traced the tag design to a poster for the 2008 Italian crime drama Gomorrah, produced by Domenico Procacci, which Scorsese had lent his name to for the US release, and the reveal accumulated over 150,000 notes on Tumblr1.

How It Spread

On November 10th, 2022, Twitter user @ai_curio posted AI-generated stills from the imaginary film, followed on November 18th by Tumblr user beelzeebub's fan-made poster with a full cast list, castanierprosper's fake movie GIFs on the 19th, tsscat's master post of the collective lore on the 21st, and caramiaddio's fan-made main theme that drew over 29,000 notes in seven hours3.

By November 22nd the fandom was dominant enough that author Neil Gaiman was buried under Goncharov questions in his Tumblr Ask box, and on November 26th Francesca Scorsese posted a TikTok in which her father acknowledged Goncharov as one of his films, canonizing the joke online2.

How to Use This Meme

Participants typically write, draw, or edit as if Goncharov is a real film they have seen, using the shared cast of characters (Goncharov, Katya, Andrey, Sofia) and Naples mafia setting to produce fake posters, screenshots, tracklists, hot takes, and fan fiction while keeping the fiction intact rather than breaking to explain it5.
