HIVliving, also known as the Hamilton AIDS Fanfiction Controversy, was a Tumblr blog that ran from 2016 through 2017 while claiming to be co-run by two HIV-positive women of color based in India. In October 2017, another Hamilton fan traced donation links to the United States and forced a confession that both personas were fabricated by a single white American college student writing Hamilton AU fanfiction, sparking a scandal Tumblr and YouTube still cite years later4.

Overview

HIVliving is not a meme format but a Tumblr shorthand for fandom identity fraud. The account posted HIV resources, personal essays and asks under two invented voices: 'Israa,' described as a nonbinary Chinese-Pakistani human trafficking survivor, and 'Naj,' described as a U.S.-born lesbian of color, both said to be living in India4. Followers recommended it as a source on HIV disclosure, stigma and life with a positive status.

The blog was also known for hard, gatekeeping stances. It argued HIV-positive people had no duty to disclose status to partners, pushed back on laws that criminalize non-disclosure, and policed who could speak in HIV conversations at all4. Alongside the activism, HIVliving ran the popular Hamilton high school AU fanfiction 'To Scale the Blue Sky,' in which some Hamilton characters are written as HIV positive, a crossover that later became central to how the scandal was framed.

The HIVliving Tumblr launched in 2016 as an HIV awareness account inside the Hamilton fandom, mixing activism posts with fanfiction4. On September 26, 2016, the linked account @allolesbean posted a first-person essay presented as Naj's account of living with HIV that pulled 2,472 notes by the time it was captured on the Internet Archive4.

The catalyst arrived in October 2017, when Naj linked a Cash.me fundraiser for medical expenses. Tumblr user digoxin-purpurea, another Hamilton fan, noticed the payout account was registered in the United States despite Naj's stated residence in India. The confrontation produced a long back-and-forth and, on October 27, 2017, a writeup titled 'WHAT HAPPENED WITH HIVLIVING' that laid out the discrepancies4.
