What is Lesbian Pose?

Lesbian Pose is a visual joke that identifies a stance with arms fanned out at the sides and palms up as the body language of lesbian cartoon characters. The gag works both played straight on canon lesbians like Amity Blight and applied ironically to characters like Frieza.

Where did Lesbian Pose come from?

It began on May 17, 2021 when YouTuber myown_noanimations posted a compilation titled '✨Lesbian Pose✨' built around a shot of Amity Blight in a Disney Channel teaser for The Owl House season 2.

What does Lesbian Pose mean?

The label jokingly treats the arms-out, palms-up stance as a tell for lesbian characters, drawing from a specific Amity Blight shot in The Owl House and applying it to any character in the same body position.

How do you use Lesbian Pose?

A typical post captions a screenshot or fan art of a character in the stance as the 'lesbian pose,' or compiles multiple such shots into a music video edit. Non-lesbian characters, like Django from Ratatouille, are often included for the absurd angle.

Is Lesbian Pose still popular?

The format stayed in use through at least May 2024, when a Ratatouille-themed compilation posted to /r/TheRatEmpire collected over 1,100 upvotes. It still resurfaces on The Owl House subreddits whenever a new character strikes the stance.

Lesbian Pose is an internet joke that labels a specific stance, arms fanned out at the sides with palms facing up, as the signature body language of lesbian cartoon characters. It started in May 2021 after a teaser for The Owl House season 2 showed openly gay witch Amity striking it, and by 2024 fans were tagging everyone from Dragon Ball Z villains to a Ratatouille rat with the same label.

Overview

Posts tagged as Lesbian Pose almost always show a character standing upright with both arms extended outward from the body and palms rotated to face forward or up. The joke works two ways. When the character actually is a confirmed lesbian, like Amity Blight or Catra from She-Ra, the caption treats the stance as a secret giveaway2. When the character is clearly not a lesbian, like Frieza or a Sonic the Hedgehog villain, the humor comes from forcing the straight-faced identification anyway5.

The format tends to run in two shapes: single screenshots with a one-line caption, and compilation edits set to music that cut together a dozen or more characters hitting the stance in sequence2 3. Fan artists on X and Reddit also redraw characters doing the pose on purpose as fan service for Owl House viewers6 8.

On May 17, 2021, the Disney Channel YouTube account uploaded an introduction tease for The Owl House season 2 that collected over 1.9 million views by 20241. Around the 11 second mark, Amity Blight, an openly lesbian witch student, appears standing with her arms fanned out at her sides and her palms turned forward3.

The same day, YouTuber myown_noanimations released a short edit titled "✨Lesbian Pose✨" that cuts Amity's shot together with scenes of other female cartoon characters, including Catra, hitting the identical stance, framing the body language as a visual marker for lesbian characters2. The edit received over 2.3 million views in three years and functions as the meme's actual origin, since Disney made the clip but the fan edit invented the label2 3.

How It Spread

Reddit picked up the label the same day the YouTube edit went up. On May 17, 2021, a screenshot pairing Amity with Catra from She-Ra was posted to /r/TheOwlHouse under the title "The official 'Title sequence lesbian pose,'" where it collected over 1,100 upvotes4. Two days later, on May 19, the same subreddit stretched the joke to non-lesbian characters when a Frieza screenshot was posted as "the most famous uses of the 'lesbian pose' from history," earning over 300 upvotes5.

On May 20, 2021, X user @halogenschein shared original artwork playing on the format that received over 8,900 likes6. That afternoon, myown_noanimations released a sequel to their first video with additional characters doing the pose, and the follow-up reached over 1.7 million views over the next three years7. The format stayed in rotation through 2023, when a June Amity fan art post titled "Amity rocking the iconic lesbian pose" cleared 1,000 upvotes8 and /r/aaaaaaacccccccce asked "What's the AroAce pose?" on July 6 to over 2,700 upvotes9.

By August 2023 the joke was being applied to characters with no queer coding at all. A Sonic the Hedgehog villain in the stance was posted to /r/MoonPissing on August 12 for over 800 upvotes10, and an Ultrakill edit on August 18 collected over 2,800 upvotes before being reposted back to /r/TheOwlHouse the same day11 12. On May 12, 2024, a compilation that included Django the rat from Ratatouille hit /r/TheRatEmpire, where it earned over 1,100 upvotes in two months13.

How to Use This Meme

A typical post identifies a character in the stance and captions it as the "lesbian pose," usually with sparkles around the text in reference to the original YouTube title. Compilation videos string together clips of unrelated characters, canon lesbian or not, hitting the pose to a music bed. Fan artists also draw characters from queer-coded shows in the pose on purpose.
