Fat Chinese Baby is an image macro of a sleeping infant curled on a blue blanket, whose head looks comically oversized next to his small body. The photo first appeared on the Chinese app Xiaohongshu before reaching Western social media in July 2023, where captions turned the baby into reaction fodder. By late 2023, X users were posting him beside burritos, puppies and other sleepy animals in absurd side-by-side jokes.

Overview

Posts in the format drop the sleeping baby into one of two joke patterns: a food comparison, usually a chubby wrapped item like a burrito, or a side-by-side with another small animal snoozing in a similar curled pose56. Captions avoid making fun of the real child and instead focus on how peacefully round and content he looks on his blue blanket1.

Shares often add short, affectionate text like 'this is me sleeping' or 'they would be friends,' handing the baby a kind of soft reaction-image role for anyone wanting to say they feel wiped out48. Later edits included cats posed identically on their sides, making the baby's fetal position the visual template7.

How to Use This Meme

Edits typically take one of two routes: a side-by-side with something equally rounded and resting, such as a burrito or a napping cat, or a caption using the baby as a stand-in for the poster feeling tired. A common convention is adding the phrase 'this is me sleeping' or a direct comparison line like 'they would be friends.'
