Overview

Lil Pump, born Gazzy Garcia, is a Florida rapper whose short, hook-heavy tracks made him a mascot of the SoundCloud Rap scene alongside artists like XXXTentacion and Lil Uzi Vert1. The appeal was less about lyrical depth and more about attitude: dyed hair, chanted ad-libs, and songs built around a single repeated phrase that was easy to meme2.

Online, Lil Pump became a running joke as much as a musician. "Gucci Gang" in particular got turned into looped edits, parody covers, and reaction videos, while Urban Dictionary entries mocked his image and IQ in equal measure3. That mix of genuine chart success and constant meme ridicule is what made him a fixture of late-2010s internet music culture1.

Lil Pump started rapping in 2016 after his friend and producer Smokepurpp handed him a beat to freestyle over1. The resulting track was released as his self-titled debut single "Lil Pump," followed by early SoundCloud cuts like "Elementary," "Ignorant," "Gang Shit," and "Drum$tick"1.

In early 2017 he dropped "D Rose" and "Boss" on SoundCloud, which together pulled over 70 million streams1. The music video for "D Rose," uploaded on January 30, 2017, racked up more than 64 million YouTube views and became the clip that pushed him out of the SoundCloud underground4.

How It Spread

By June 2017, Lil Pump had signed with Tha Lights Global and Warner Bros. Records, moving from viral SoundCloud kid to a major-label act1. His self-titled debut mixtape arrived on October 6, 2017 and peaked at number 3 on the U.S. albums chart1.

The song that cemented his meme status was "Gucci Gang," a track built almost entirely on repeating the phrase "Gucci gang" dozens of times. Urban Dictionary entries from that era joke about friends reciting the hook until people walk away, capturing how the song was as much a punchline as a hit3. Parody videos, sped-up edits, and reaction clips flooded YouTube, turning Pump's look and delivery into shorthand for the whole SoundCloud Rap wave2.

His persona, face tattoos, dreads dyed every color, and a permanently unbothered expression, gave meme creators an endless supply of stills and clips to remix, keeping him in circulation well beyond any single song3.
