Overview

The show's structure is the hook. Patriarch Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill) is remarried to Gloria (Sofía Vergara), a young Colombian woman with an elementary school-aged son Manny (Rico Rodriguez). Jay's daughter Claire (Julie Bowen) and her husband Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) raise three kids, Haley, Alex and Luke, while Jay's son Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and his partner Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) adopt a daughter, Lily, from Vietnam3.

Episodes typically weave the three households through separate storylines that converge by the end, using mockumentary talking-head interviews with the characters. Urban Dictionary contributors describe the show as 'realistically hilarious' and compare its style directly to The Office, singling out Wednesday nights as its home slot on network TV2.

How It Spread

The show's fan following built out across social platforms during its run. One Urban Dictionary entry ranked it above rival network programs like American Idol and CSI as the strongest Wednesday-night option, calling it the main reason to watch TV that evening2.

One of the show's stranger off-platform moments arrived when a fundamentalist preacher pulled a Modern Family cast photo for a religious post about family, without realizing the image showed Mitchell and Cameron's household with their adopted daughter Lily. The image circulated online and both of the preacher's social media accounts were deleted afterward1.
