The Nut Button started as an innocent Tumblr joke in December 2015 when user zakk.lol edited a stock image of a hand slamming a blue LIKE button. After someone swapped LIKE for NUT, the sexually charged reaction image took off across Tumblr, Twitter, and Reddit, spawning one of the defining button meme formats of 2016 and 2017.

Overview

The Nut Button format shows a hand poised to slam a bright blue button, with a setup caption above and a punchline word crudely edited onto the button itself1. On December 6, 2015, Tumblr user zakk.lol posted the source image as a joke reply to a Smash the Like request from user browningtons3. The button in that original image said LIKE, not NUT3. By January 12, 2016, the post had picked up 129,729 notes3. Someone later edited the word NUT onto the button, and that modified version became the reaction image the internet now knows.

On January 11, 2017, blog memearchives reblogged zakk.lol's original post after zakk.lol added a note reading 'This is it. The original use of this image. I created this with pure intentions, and now it's known only as the Nut Button'3. The identity of the person who first swapped LIKE for NUT is still unconfirmed.

On January 26, 2016, Tumblr user kuma-dot-net posted one of the earliest documented NUT edits, captioned 'when u see da anime bae and she thicc' with BOY on the button, which pulled roughly 7,000 notes over three months3. On April 6, 2016, Twitter user Dolan Dark posted an edit reading 'Don't ever nut to me or my son ever again,' a riff on the Don't Talk To Me Or My Son Ever Again format, gaining over 200 retweets and 800 likes within three weeks3.

The format jumped to Reddit and mutated in March 2017, when the Multiple Button variation blew up on r/dankmemes2. On March 10, 2017, Redditor Pm_Me_Ur_Ricecooker posted a version choosing to prevent toilet water splashback over ending world hunger3. The next day, Redditor DankMemesBestMemes announced 'Multiple choice button memes on the rise!' on r/memeeconomy4.

On March 12, 2017, Redditor ImAGod47 posted a Multiple Button image selecting 'Meet Herobrine in Minecraft,' which pulled over 2,400 votes at 98% upvoted on r/dankmemes within 48 hours2. A wave of further variations followed on the subreddit through mid-March2.
