Ween released "Ocean Man" on June 24, 1997 as the second single from their sixth studio album, The Mollusk3. The song reached a much wider audience when Stephen Hillenburg licensed it for the final scene of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004, playing over SpongeBob's celebration after being named manager of the Krusty Krab 23.

The connection between the band and the show ran deeper than a single sync. Ween guitarist Mickey Melchiondo, aka Dean Ween, later recalled that Hillenburg had first contacted the band because The Mollusk itself inspired his "Bugs Bunny on the ocean floor" cartoon pitch, and Ween wrote the SpongeBob track "Loop de Loop" for the show before it ever aired1.
