Shaggy's Power is a Scooby-Doo image macro series that turns stoner sidekick Shaggy Rogers into a reality-warping demigod who never uses more than a fraction of his real strength. The joke traces to a 2018 DeviantArt script and exploded across Reddit and 4chan in January 2019, eventually pulling in a Mortal Kombat 11 petition with tens of thousands of signatures and a public co-sign from actor Matthew Lillard.

Overview

Each image pairs an intimidating shot of Shaggy with a caption where he shrugs off a fight and admits he barely used any of his real strength, riffing on anime power-scaling lines like 'this isn't even 1% of my power.' Common edits stick katanas or other weapons in his hands1 or drop him into Superman and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure panels4.

The subreddit /r/BadAssShaggy became the meme's headquarters, filling with re-subbed still frames from the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film in which Matthew Lillard's interview quotes carry menacing new dialogue8. The tone stays deadpan: Shaggy speaks softly, sometimes apologizes for the destruction, and levels planets between sentences.

On April 1, 2018, DeviantArt user Nekroz-of-Mokey posted a script for a comedy sketch called 'Shaggy Rogers vs. Madara Uchiha,' spun off the earlier Ultra Instinct Shaggy edit trend, in which Shaggy tells the Naruto villain 'this isn't even 1% of 1% of 1% of my power, kid'8. That triple-percentage line pinned the character to the anime power-scaling bit that Reddit and 4chan later ran with.

How It Spread

The bit hit Reddit on July 19, 2018, when u/pizzazzle18 uploaded a video of Shaggy fighting off thugs to /r/BossFight, and u/muffler_kek replied 'Like, you only made me use 10% of my power man,' which became the format's working caption10. On November 2, u/narwhal-lord14 posted a katana-wielding Shaggy photoshop that pulled 3,100 upvotes over three months1. On January 5, 2019, an anonymous 4chan /b/ user wrote a greentext story built around the macro11, which u/matthewoliveira mirrored to /r/greentext the next day for over 2,000 upvotes in 48 hours2.

Between January 13 and 16, the format cross-pollinated with u/roaringdoom's JoJo-style edit on /r/ShitPostCrusaders3, a Superman-begs-for-mercy comic panel on /r/dankmemes4, and @GnarlyBuster's Sasuke Choke Edit tweet, which pulled over 5,100 retweets in two days5. A screenshot of that tweet reposted to /r/dankmemes hit 39,200 upvotes in the same window9. On January 17, /r/BadAssShaggy launched and passed 22,400 subscribers within eleven days. Ten days after that, a Woken News Network Change.org petition to make Shaggy a Mortal Kombat 11 DLC character cleared 58,700 signatures in 24 hours6, and Matthew Lillard himself tweeted the subreddit with the message 'Dear universe. Please never let this end'7.
