Overview

Good Guy Greg, often shortened to GGG, is an advice animal image macro built on a cropped photo of a square-jawed young man grinning at the camera with a hand-rolled joint hanging from his mouth3. The captions place him in everyday social situations and describe him doing the thoughtful, generous, or empathetic thing rather than the selfish one. Redditors and 4chan posters treat him as shorthand for wholesome behavior, the kind you would want from a roommate at a party or a stranger holding a door.

The character was set up from the start as the mirror image of Scumbag Steve, whose captions describe petty betrayals. Where Steve steals your weed and lies about it, Greg rolls one and passes it your way. Urban Dictionary's earliest entry identified him plainly as an internet meme on 4chan and Reddit4.

Greg Daniels shared his photo on Reddit with the hope it would be used positively. The photo was quickly adopted as a meme format, and Greg became aware of his unexpected internet fame. Unlike some meme subjects, Greg embraced the positive nature of his meme and appeared in interviews discussing it.

The meme worked with audiences who appreciated its optimistic and positive messaging. Variations ranged from friendship considerations to romantic gestures to general kindness. How to Use This Meme

The format follows the standard advice animal grid: Greg's face on a green and yellow radial background, with a two-part caption read top to bottom. The setup line typically describes an everyday situation where someone would expect to get burned, and the punchline flips it into a small act of decency, such as "Sleeps on your couch / makes breakfast"1. Common conventions include weed sharing, hosting, and roommate scenarios, and Greg is often paired directly against a Scumbag Steve macro for a side by side contrast.
