The Skeleton War traces back to a July 27, 2013 tweet from Twitter user @dril reading, 'if your grave doesnt say "rest in peace" on it you are automatically drafted into the skeleton war1.' The tweet accumulated thousands of retweets and likes over the following years and became one of @dril's more-quoted lines1.

The joke did not become a seasonal event until October 2014, when Tumblr picked it up. On October 4, 2014, the Tumblr blog theskeletonwar published an explainer post treating the war as a genuine ongoing conflict, which pulled in over 30,000 notes within two weeks and effectively coded the format as an October thing3.

How It Spread

Tumblr did most of the early lifting. On October 1, 2014, the blog technicolour-tendencies posted a skeleton image captioned 'Let the Skeleton Wars begin!' and racked up more than 800 notes within two weeks6. Mainstream Tumblr accounts jumped in fast. On October 6, 2014, Buzzfeed's official Tumblr answered a reader ask about the war by declaring the site 'welcomes our new skeleton overlords7.' Confused outsiders turned to Reddit two days later, when user SbenjiB asked r/OutOfTheLoop what the Skeleton War even was, drawing an explanatory reply from user Hitandrun1275. The Daily Dot published a rundown titled 'The strange and frightful tale behind Tumblr's Skeleton War' on October 31, 20149, and Urban Dictionary contributor Brian McBrian defined it as 'a century-long siege against the fuckboys4.'

The joke came back every October. In 2015 the indie studio Skeleton Crew released a third-person party game literally called Skeleton War4. On September 26, 2016, another r/OutOfTheLoop thread asked about 'the Skeleton War everyone on Imgur is preparing for,' pulling in over 1,600 points and 120 comments within a year8. In October 2017, YouTuber Rehvion uploaded 'Dark Souls 3 PVP - Skeleton War,' pulling more than 18,000 views in three weeks10.
