Spurdo Sparde

2009image macroclassic

Spurdo Sparde is a crudely drawn Finnish parody of Pedobear that started on the imageboard Kuvalauta in 2009. The character was invented to mock underage newcomers by exaggerating their bad grammar, all-caps typing, and lazy repost habits. It spawned a whole cast of Spurdo comics and spread from Finnish chans to 4chan and Krautchan.

Overview

Spurdo Sparde is a deliberately terrible MS Paint drawing of Pedobear, with a lopsided smile, googly eyes, and captions written in broken all-caps 3. The joke is the drawing style itself: the worse it looks, the funnier it is supposed to be.

The character stands in for a specific Finnish internet stereotype known as a 'Jonne', an underage kid who spams imageboards, writes in caps with no punctuation, and drinks too many energy drinks 2. Over time, Spurdo grew from a single drawing into a whole cast of characters starring in short comics on Finnish humor sites like Naurunappula 1.

How It Spread

By summer 2011, Spurdo had moved to Ylilauta, the successor board to Kuvalauta, where users kept pushing the drawings into more surreal territory. The character also spread to Naurunappula, a Finnish humor site launched in 2007, where users started building multi-panel Spurdo comics .

Non-Finnish imageboards caught on soon after. Finnish posters spam-raided 4chan and the German-language Krautchan with Spurdo edits, and on March 23, 2012, a sprite of Spurdo took over the shared canvas on Drawball .

How to Use This Meme

The template is a rough, lopsided Pedobear drawn quickly in MS Paint, typically captioned in broken all-caps with intentional misspellings. Common conventions include recurring gags around energy drinks, Nokia phones, and awkward everyday situations, often stitched together into multi-panel comics in the style built on Naurunappula .
