T-Rex's Short Arms is a running gag that mocks the tyrannosaurus rex's tiny, useless forelimbs, most often by drawing the dinosaur as a sad creature who cannot do basic human tasks like clapping or masturbating. The joke jumped from Gary Larson's Far Side newsprint comics to a 2007 Disney film and then Reddit, before spawning the wildly reblogged Tumblr project T-Rex Trying in 2012.

Overview

T-Rex's Short Arms, also known as Sad T-Rex, is a webcomic and illustration gag built on one anatomical fact: the tyrannosaurus rex had a giant body attached to comically stubby forelimbs. Artists draw the dinosaur pouting, weeping or shrugging as it fails at everyday actions that require reach, from clapping and hugging to putting on a cardigan1.

The punchline works because the tasks are usually mundane and human. A T-Rex Trying panel might show the dinosaur unable to paint the top of its own house6 or slip its arms into a sweater7, and that gap between apex predator and pathetic office worker is the whole joke. Later riffs got raunchier, with Reddit-era comics staging the T-Rex unable to masturbate or applaud2.

The format is single-panel, low-detail and endlessly remixable, which is why it moved so cleanly from newsprint to webcomic to t-shirt design5 to Google's Chrome offline mascot9.

The T-Rex-with-tiny-arms joke predates the internet. Gary Larson ran a mid-1980s Far Side panel showing a Tyrannosaur family at dinner, the mother scolding the father for being unable to pass the mashed potatoes because his forearms are too short1. That single-panel setup gave the modern meme its template of a domestic scene undone by dinosaur anatomy.

The first widely cited online instance is a clip from Disney's 2007 CGI film Meet The Robinsons, uploaded to YouTube by user Tallworm on April 7, 200710. In the scene, Tiny the Dinosaur corners Lewis Robinson but cannot grab him, then admits, "I have a big head, and tiny arms. I'm just not sure how well this plan was thought through"1. Two years later, on May 6, 2009, artist Christian Blethen posted a webcomic called Sad T-Rex to Reddit, giving the joke its recurring nickname2.

How It Spread

Reddit did most of the early lifting. Blethen's Sad T-Rex comic was reposted in March 2011 by user Fuck_You_Im_Scottish for 366 points3, then again in June 2011 by wrong_game for 581 points4. In September 2011, t-shirt company Goodie Two Sleeves put a Sad T-Rex clapping design on shirts and pins, and the product photos went viral on r/funny after user firefucker submitted them5.

The format broke out on Tumblr on January 22, 2012, when Hugh Murphy launched T-Rex Trying, a blog dedicated to sketches of a T-Rex attempting ordinary tasks. Of the five drawings Murphy posted that day, T-Rex Trying To Paint His House hit 31,182 notes6 and T-Rex Trying To Put On A Cardigan hit 13,2017. Murphy compiled the series into a book, T-Rex Trying and Trying: The Unfortunate Trials of a Prehistoric Family, published on October 7, 20148.

The joke crossed into mainstream software the same year. In September 2014, Chrome Canary shipped a hidden offline game starring a running T-Rex on the browser's "Can't Connect to the Internet" page, which DCInno covered on September 27, 20149.
