">tfw no gf" started as 4chan greentext shorthand for "that feel when no girlfriend," first archived on the /jp/ board in September 2010 as a one-line sign-off for posts about loneliness. Paired with the watery-eyed That Feel Guy wojak, it spawned a dedicated submission site, YouTube edits set to sad music, and a 2020 SXSW documentary by filmmaker Alex Lee Moyer.

Overview

In practice, ">tfw no gf" sits as the closing line of a 4chan greentext story, where each line opens with ">" and sets up some lonely scenario before landing on the tag. Posters attach the That Feel Guy wojak, with watery eyes and a wobbly frown, so the drawing carries the emotion without any extra text3.

Variations run from quiet confessional posts to photoshopped edits where That Feel Guy strums a guitar, sits alone in a bedroom, or stares out a rainy window1. Tone wavers between actual loneliness and a self-aware performance of it, which is why the tag outlasted most other 4chan feel-posts and attracted outside documentary attention a decade later4.

How It Spread

YouTuber Bernd Meier uploaded "That feel when no girlfriend" on April 5th, 2012, a photoshopped clip of That Feel Guy playing guitar over a song about being "forever alone" that gathered over 118,000 views and 1,000 comments in its first two years1. On June 9th that year the tfwnogf YouTube channel launched with more edits of the character set to dramatic background music2.

Mainstream notice arrived with Alex Lee Moyer's documentary TFW NO GF, previewed in a March 12th, 2020 YouTube interview between Moyer and writer Justin Murphy that featured clips of podcaster Edward Waverley, better known online as Kantbot3. The Spool published a March 17th SXSW review calling the film "a surface-level look at internet trolls"4. Moyer wrote an April 20th Deadline op-ed about opting into Amazon Prime Video's virtual SXSW program after the in-person festival was canceled6.
