What is The Absolute Madman?

A Facebook screenshot where two boys brag that their friend Dean has been talked into lying on the floor, now used as a mocking template for ironically overstated feats.

Where did The Absolute Madman come from?

The earliest known repost appeared on Funnyjunk on May 27, 2014, when user superstephtime included it in a 'CringeComp' thread, and it reappeared the same day on Cepcerk alongside the Neil deGrasse Tyson 'Badass' reaction image.

What does The Absolute Madman mean?

The phrase mocks someone being praised in extravagant terms for an unimpressive act, with Dean lying flat on a floor as the archetype of the gag.

How do you use The Absolute Madman?

Edits typically drop Dean or a substitute into a dramatic setting like a Super Smash Bros. reveal or a Nintendo veterans lineup, while captioning the mundane behavior as if it were extraordinary.

Is The Absolute Madman still popular?

The format saw its biggest reposting activity through 2014 across Funnyjunk, Imgur, and Reddit, and still circulates as a classic ironic-praise reference rather than a trending format.

Published October 1, 2026

The Absolute Madman is a viral image macro built from a Facebook post in which two boys brag that their friend Dean let them talk him into lying on the floor. The hilariously unimpressive 'feat' turned the caption into a punchline and launched years of edits that recast Dean as a mock-heroic figure, eventually branching into a John Lennon spinoff on 4chan's /mu/ board.

Overview

The format pairs the original Facebook screenshot's chest-beating caption with its wildly unimpressive content: Dean, pictured flat on the floor, apparently convinced to lie down by two friends who then describe him as uncontrollable1. The whole joke is the gap between the hype language and the mundane act, which is why Funnyjunk users initially archived the post as cringe rather than genuine bragging1.

Later edits lean on the same contrast by placing Dean into settings where mayhem actually fits. One image announces him as a Super Smash Bros. 4 newcomer joining the roster8, while a drawn piece titled 'HAHAHA oh wow!' redraws the scene with Mario, Link, and other Nintendo veterans standing over the floored subject5. A February 2015 offshoot called John Lennon The Absolute Madman reused the ironic reverence on a Lennon portrait, with /mu/ posters pointing to an unreleased Beatles song titled 'Madman' as added justification for the bit6.

Fan edits ran in parallel to the straight reposts. Funnyjunk user CrushOrange replied to the original CringeComp thread on May 28, 2014 with a Super Smash Bros. 4 announcement card framing Dean as a new fighter8. On September 19, user teranin uploaded a drawing that swapped the original trio for Mario, Link, and other Nintendo veterans and drew 12,000 views5. A /mu/ thread on February 15, 2015 then branched the template into John Lennon The Absolute Madman after a rare-photos discussion attached the phrase to a shot of Lennon6.

How to Use This Meme

Captions typically borrow the original's awed, swaggering tone and apply it to something trivial or anticlimactic. A common convention is to drop Dean, or a stand-in subject, into a Super Smash Bros. reveal card, a Nintendo lineup, or any staged scene where the person being hyped is clearly doing nothing of consequence.
