A line delivered by virtual YouTuber Kizuna Ai during a November 2016 clip about picking a Twitter handle turned into one of the signature reaction images of /r/Animemes in late 2018. Anime fans adopted the screenshot as shorthand for awkward, uncomfortable, or horny-adjacent predicaments they could not easily explain.

Overview

This... Has Turned Into a Difficult Situation is a reaction screenshot pulled from an early Kizuna Ai video, where the virtual YouTuber reacts with flustered disbelief to a minor setback1. In meme use, the still gets paired with text or secondary images describing a predicament the poster would rather not deal with, from embarrassing anime questions to NSFW tangents that spiraled out of control2.

The format works because Kizuna Ai's expression sits in that specific zone between polite composure and visible panic, which maps cleanly onto the kind of awkward anime-adjacent situations /r/Animemes loves to post about3. Captions are usually written as if the character herself is reacting to whatever cursed scene appears above or below her, treating the two panels as one continuous moment4.

On November 29th, 2016, the YouTube channel A.I.Channel uploaded a video in which Kizuna Ai tried to register a Twitter handle, only to run into the problem that every variation she tried was already taken, prompting her to sigh out the line that would later title the meme1. The video itself was framed as a casual update about the character's new social account, not a comedy bit, which made the hyper-expressive reaction stand out.

The reaction image broke out of the original video on April 9th, 2017, when Tumblr user justintaco posted a screenshot of the moment to Tumblr, where it eventually pulled roughly 13,000 notes as anime blogs recirculated it2. From that Tumblr post, the still began traveling as a standalone reaction without most reposters knowing the full source clip.

How It Spread

The screenshot saw scattered use through 2017 but took off on /r/Animemes in late 2018, where posters began pairing it with cursed anime panels4. On October 10th, 2018, Reddit user Bence830 submitted a version matched with a scene from the hentai MC High Eighth Period in which a character delivers a graphic line about dying men, pulling around 3,600 upvotes3. Days after that, user xKiro27 posted another entry built around a scene from Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto dakedo Imouto ja Nai in which Suzuka Nagami asks her brother what Ahegao is, reaching roughly 3,900 upvotes5.

The format kept its grip on the subreddit through December. On December 8th, 2018, user Mini_Knight uploaded a reaction to a Zombie Land Saga yuri comic by Twitter artist yu_ng_km, which cleared about 3,000 upvotes over the following days7. The underlying comic from yu_ng_km had already circulated on Japanese Twitter before being recut into the Kizuna Ai sandwich panel6.

By that point the still was fully absorbed into /r/Animemes vocabulary, used whenever a poster needed a visual way to say they regretted whatever they had just watched, read, or asked a sibling about4. The meme is still cited as one of Kizuna Ai's earliest crossover moments outside dedicated VTuber audiences.
