A Reverent Fuck is a copypasta that started as a February 2021 tweet gushing over a WandaVision line, then got flipped into a joke format where people paste the same reverent screenwriter praise onto absurd or unimpressive clips1. The template mocks overwrought stan reactions to Marvel dialogue by pairing them with things like Dunkaccino2.

Overview

A Reverent Fuck is a Twitter copypasta built off a single earnest tweet praising a line from Disney+ series WandaVision1. The original post described "every screenwriter in the world whispering a reverent 'FUCK' under their breath" at a piece of dialogue, and users grabbed the phrasing to mock the tone2.

The joke works by keeping the reverent screenwriter wording word-for-word while swapping the celebrated scene for something obviously silly, like a bit from Dunkaccino or Spy Kids 23. The gap between the breathless praise and the goofy clip is the whole punchline.

On February 27th, 2021, Twitter user @MadHat31 posted about a moment in WandaVision when Vision says, "What is grief if not love persevering?"2 The tweet read, "Do you hear that sound? It's every screenwriter in the world whispering a reverent 'FUCK' under their breath," and pulled in more than 9,800 retweets and 75,000 likes5.

The line came at a peak moment for WandaVision discourse, and the sincerity of the reaction is what set off both sincere agreement and heavy pushback1.

How It Spread

Backlash arrived fast, with users pointing out that the line was fairly trite and that stanning Marvel dialogue this hard was a bit much5. Rather than argue, people started copying the exact wording of the tweet and attaching it to obviously bad or absurd media, turning the format into a copypasta1.

Early parodies showed up right in the replies. Twitter user @fromthedale_ paired the reverent screenwriter line with Adam Sandler's Dunkaccino from Jack and Jill3, and @gayswordfight applied it to a scene from Spy Kids 24. The template spread from there, with a version from @AdequateEmily picking up over 4,400 retweets and 37,000 likes6, and one from @fellawhomstdve pulling roughly 200 retweets and 4,400 likes7.

Uproxx wrote up the trend in early March 2021, framing it as a running joke about "iconic" movie moments and locking A Reverent Fuck in as a recurring Twitter format for dunking on overwritten scripts1.

How to Use This Meme

The common convention is to keep @MadHat31's original wording almost intact, usually opening with "Do you hear that sound?" and closing on the reverent screenwriter "FUCK" beat. Posters typically attach a video clip, screenshot, or quote of a line that is the opposite of prestige writing, like a cheesy kids' movie moment or a widely mocked piece of dialogue, and let the mismatch do the work.
