Overview

All The Things centers on two panels from Allie Brosh's blog comic, showing a stick figure with wild hair, one arm raised, mouth open mid-shout1. Remixers swap the caption to declare hyperbolic determination toward any task using the 'X all the Y' snowclone structure, such as 'clean ALL the things'3. The exploitable pairs the drawing's manic body language with all-caps text ending in an oversized 'ALL THE THINGS' line.

What makes All The Things recognizable is the specific pose and the grammatical structure rather than the exact wording1. Users apply the template to chores, hobbies, or any activity that demands unsustainable enthusiasm, letting a single drawing carry an unlimited number of joke setups.

Allie Brosh published the comic 'This is Why I'll Never be an Adult' on her blog Hyperbole and a Half on June 17, 20101. The post described her cycle of manic energy followed by burnout when facing adult chores, and the two panels showing her shouting 'CLEAN ALL THE THINGS!' provided the images that were later remixed across the web1.

How It Spread

On April 28, 2011, a thread on the image-remixing site Canvas collected user edits of the 'clean all the things' panel, and Canvas's own blog featured the compilation days later3. Reddit picked up the format that summer. A June 23, 2011 post titled 'Every afternoon on NPR' swapped the caption for a parody of NPR's 'All Things Considered' show and hit the front page with 6,299 upvotes3.

A dedicated home appeared on July 13, 2011 when r/allthethings launched, though it stayed niche with around 97 subscribers by mid-August2. The 'X all the Y' snowclone outlived the image macro's Reddit peak, sticking around in casual writing beyond 20114.

How to Use This Meme

To make an All The Things edit, start with one of Brosh's two panels, typically the raised-arm shout pose, then rewrite the caption to describe an action taken to a ridiculous extreme1. The common convention is all-caps text ending with the phrase 'ALL THE THINGS,' such as 'BAKE ALL THE PIES' or 'READ ALL THE BOOKS.'
