Overview

Area 51 is the nickname for a classified U.S. Air Force installation near Groom Lake, Nevada, about 120 miles north of Las Vegas1. Online it works as instant shorthand for aliens, UFOs, and government secrets, with jokes ranging from grainy UFO photos to Naruto-running raiders trying to breach the fence3.

The base itself is buried inside the Nevada Test and Training Range, an area roughly the size of Connecticut, and the government also refers to the site as Watertown or Dreamland1. That secrecy is exactly what made Area 51 stick as a meme, since any claim about it is basically unfalsifiable4.

The airfield at Groom Lake was set up in 1955 after President Dwight D. Eisenhower approved the site to develop the CIA's Lockheed U-2 spy plane, with the land previously used as a WWII aerial gunnery range1. UFO reports around the base spiked from the 1950s onward, largely because the U-2 and later OXCART flew at altitudes and shapes civilians had never seen before3.

The modern alien mythology mostly traces to 1989, when Bob Lazar went public claiming he had worked on recovered extraterrestrial craft at a site near Groom Lake, cementing the base as the go-to reference for UFO conspiracy talk3.

How It Spread

Pop culture pushed Area 51 mainstream in the mid-90s. The 1995 light-gun arcade shooter Area 51 dropped players into the base to fight alien zombies, and the 1996 film Independence Day used the site as a hangar for Roswell wreckage and alien corpses3. The U.S. government did not officially acknowledge Area 51 existed until declassified CIA documents were released in 20131.

The meme peaked in summer 2019 with the Storm Area 51 Facebook event, a joke raid that Fox News reported could draw up to 2 million RSVPs1. Urban Dictionary entries from that era joke about attendees getting "fucked by Naruto runners" or walking out with "rayguns and some ufos and aliens", capturing the tone of the raid discourse2.

How to Use This Meme

The Area 51 reference typically shows up any time someone jokes about hidden government secrets, unexplained lights in the sky, or the Storm Area 51 Naruto-run bit. Common conventions include captioning UFO clips with "they finally let one out" or replying to any leak news with "straight from Area 51".
