Overview

Cat Transcendence is a short video clip of a house cat reacting with wide-eyed shock after a small flower is placed on its head1. The cat sits perfectly still with dilated pupils, appearing to enter some kind of trance state, which gave the meme its name.

The Dodo, which helped surface the video in June 2015, described the cat as 'completely incapable of being a cat' and joked that the world may never know if it would recover1. That stunned, frozen expression became the meme's visual hook, later paired with dramatic film scores and voiceovers to imply the cat was witnessing something profound.

The original footage was posted to Instagram on June 18, 2015, by user sophiella_cats_n_nails, who sang the Russian ballad 'Lilies of the Valley' to her cat before placing the flower on its head3. The clip, which also circulates as 'The Prophecy Is True Cat' and 'Flower Crashes Cat,' was re-uploaded to the YouTube channel lolzing4gifs on June 25, 2015, where it drew more than 2.8 million views in its first year2.

How It Spread

On June 30, 2015, animal news site The Dodo ran a write-up titled 'The Flower BROKE The Cat,' calling the cat 'completely incapable of being a cat' after the flower touched down on its head1. Through the second half of 2015 the video floated across YouTube and Imgur as GIF reposts and small parodies, but none of those early reuploads found a wider audience.

The breakout came on January 23, 2016, when YouTuber Max Goodrich uploaded a five-second remix pairing the shot with Morpheus's line 'the prophecy is true' from 'The Matrix Reloaded' and Hans Zimmer's 'Mountains' score from 'Interstellar,' then cross-posted the edit to Vine and Instagram the same day, sending the clip viral through early 20163.

How to Use This Meme

The template typically pairs the frozen-cat frame with dramatic music or a serious film quote, implying the cat is receiving some kind of cosmic knowledge. Common conventions include swapping in different film scores, echoing voiceovers about prophecies or revelations, and captioning the still frame with the profound truth the cat supposedly just glimpsed.
