'Diary 30: Superman Is Coming to School' and 'Diary 31: Humiliation' are two vlogs YouTuber Daxflame posted on March 2, 2007, with the first showing him bragging about wearing a Superman costume to impress a classmate named Sophia and the second returning hours later to call it the most humiliating day of his life. By 2016, Redditors on r/me_irl were pairing the two thumbnails side-by-side as a before-and-after joke, and TikTok edits layering Pedro Pascal reactions over the pair hit millions of views in 2021.

Overview

Side-by-side placement of the two YouTube thumbnails forms the core of the meme. On the left, teenage Daxflame beams proudly in a blue Superman costume, convinced his crush will fall for him1. On the right, the same costume reappears but Dax looks defeated after the plan backfired at school2. Meme-makers lift the two thumbnails and set them next to each other as a before-and-after template for any plan that goes catastrophically wrong.

Captions typically label the first image with an ambitious intention and the second with the humiliating outcome. Pedro Pascal reaction edits that layer the laughing-then-crying clip under the two frames amplify the whiplash between the two moods6. Dax himself leaned into the joke years later by making reaction and duet videos that treat the pairing as fan canon7.

Daxflame, a teen vlogger known on early YouTube for his awkward, exaggerated performances, uploaded 'Diary 30: Superman Is Coming to School' on March 2, 20071. He enthusiastically explained his plan to wear a Superman costume to class so a girl named Sophia could admire his muscles, promising he and Sophia would be dating by the end of the day. Hours later that same day, Dax posted 'Diary 31: Humiliation,' detailing how the stunt turned into what he called the most embarrassing day of his life, with the twist that his school's celebrity costume day was actually scheduled for the following Friday2.

How It Spread

Nearly a decade after the two videos first appeared, Redditor blindwombat shared the thumbnails side-by-side on r/me_irl on October 21, 2016, where the post gathered over 2,200 upvotes3. On October 30, 2020, Daxflame revisited the moment himself with a reaction video that drew over 1.2 million views45.

Daxflame answered back on June 10 with a TikTok asking where the Pedro Pascal clip actually came from, drawing 3.4 million views7.

A second resurgence hit in July 2022: @vpstt posted a video spotlighting both thumbnails on July 12 and went past a million views, prompting Daxflame to duet it the next day and confirm he was still alive after fans had worried otherwise89.
