Overview

Discord Kitten is a slang term for a Discord user, usually a young woman, who takes on a submissive persona for an older male 'daddy' figure in exchange for attention or Discord Nitro subscriptions1. The visible meme form is the catchphrase 'daddy will be back on discord soon, kitten,' pasted over screenshots of stereotypical Discord users, dyed-hair selfies, and messy bedrooms often called Neckbeard Nests6.

The joke cuts both ways. It mocks the pink-and-kawaii 'kitten' aesthetic and the middle-aged men chasing them, usually by pairing the caption with the most cringeworthy visual the poster can find3. Urban Dictionary sums up the arrangement as a 'kind of Sugar Baby appearing on discord' who is looking for Nitro from a 'daddy'1.

The earliest known online reference came from Twitter user @SlaytypeDA on December 31st, 2016, and the tweet itself suggested the term was already circulating inside private Discord servers before that3. A few weeks later, on January 17th, 2017, Redditor Kiibun posted in /r/GamerPals asking to connect with players and giving her 'kitten name' as Maggie, prompting male commenters to reply with their own Discord handles2.

How It Spread

Through 2018, kitten-flavored personals showed up in NSFW subreddits like /r/BDSMpersonals and /r/FurryKikPals, where users pitched themselves as kittens looking for a Discord daddy3. The 'daddy will be back on discord soon kitten' phrasing itself first appeared on Twitter on August 30th, 2019, from user @strwbearrie, and picked up steam through late 2019 into 20203.

The template hit its viral form in spring 2020. On April 14th, 2020, Twitter user @scobesx paired the caption with a photo of a Neckbeard Nest bedroom and pulled roughly 840 likes6. That summer, Redditor weebthrowawyaccount posted a Snapchat screenshot captioned 'hop on discord, kitten' to /r/justneckbeardthings, scoring more than 300 upvotes5. Urban Dictionary officially added the term on September 23rd, 20201.

The mainstream breakthrough came in April 2021 when Twitch streamers Quackity and GeorgeNotFound leaned into a bit about being a daddy and a kitten on a Minecraft stream. On April 26th, Quackity tweeted just the words 'discord kitten' and pulled roughly 274,500 likes, pushing the term into wider Gen-Z internet vocabulary4.
