Overview

"Drew Like a Dark, Fucked Up Version of X Haha. Just a Glimpse Into My Dark Reality" is a two-image phrasal template where users pair a recognizable character with their own crudely drawn 'evil' redraw of the same subject1. The gag almost always flops the promised menace, since the redrawn image rarely looks disturbing, which makes the over-serious caption, riffing on 'Welcome to My Twisted Mind' and Joker-style edgelord voice, read as self-parody3.

For its first two years the format leaned on hand-drawn sketches, but by 2023 contributors began swapping in polished digital art, photo edits, and fan illustrations5. The long monologuing caption also became a plug-and-play shell that any subject could be dropped into, from cartoon protagonists to fast-food mascots6.

The format debuted on October 5th, 2021, when Twitter user @kaiklops posted a photo of the Hamburger Helper mascot next to a doodled 'evil' twin, captioned with the now-standard line about a full stare into their perspective making 'most simply go insane'1. The tweet picked up around 17,600 likes within a day and locked in the two-image, over-serious-caption structure that every later variation copied3.

How It Spread

A day later, on October 6th, 2021, Twitter user @Dj_Scoliosis reworked the template with Homer Simpson but pulled only about five likes3. A bigger hit came from @Wheatskins_ on November 22nd, 2021, whose Jack Manifold rendition drew roughly 13,900 likes over the following year and a half7.

The trend went dormant through most of 2022 before a January 2023 revival. @AlolanRabbifuto's Jigglypuff take, posted January 12th, 2023, hit about 30,300 likes in eight days2. The next day, @SO0u0o's Bluey version pulled roughly 37,500 likes inside a week6.

On January 19th, 2023, TikToker @davidfreemanspamz carried the meme to TikTok with a 'fucked up dark version of a smiley face' set to Have a Nice Life's song 'Bloodhail,' racking up about 249,600 plays and 62,300 likes in a day4. Fan-art sites picked it up too, with a DeviantArt user posting a version featuring an original character named Ricky Feathers5.

How to Use This Meme

The format typically pairs two images: an untouched picture of a familiar character on top and the poster's own 'dark, fucked up' rendition on the bottom. The caption follows the @kaiklops original almost verbatim, swapping only the character's name into the 'Drew like a dark, fucked up version of [X]' slot1. The humor usually comes from mismatch, since the redraw is meant to look sinister but ends up goofy, clashing with the melodramatic monologue about a twisted inner reality2.
