Overview

Galaxy Gas Whippets is a slang term and meme trend referring to young men, mostly in the United States, misusing nitrous oxide canisters sold under the Galaxy Gas brand1. 'Whippets' is longtime slang for nitrous oxide cartridges, and Galaxy Gas is a company that sells large flavored nitrous tanks marketed for culinary use2.

The meme took off in mid-2024 as clips of young men inhaling from Galaxy Gas tanks in cars, drive-thrus, and fast-food restaurants circulated on X and TikTok3. The joke centers on the deep, distorted voice users produce right after a hit, most famously in a clip where a man responds 'My name Lil T man' when asked his name4. News coverage of rapper Kanye West's alleged nitrous oxide addiction that same year kept the topic in the wider conversation1.

Recreational nitrous oxide use goes back to 18th-century 'laughing gas parties,' and by the 2010s the gas was widely sold in whipped cream chargers and balloon kits in U.S. grocery stores and online1. The Galaxy Gas brand itself has been active since at least August 2021 and posted a tank assembly tutorial on YouTube on March 8th, 2022 that pulled over 200,000 views5.

Early jokes about people using Galaxy Gas recreationally appeared on X in late 2023, including a November 7th, 2023 post from @thatgalpebbless6. On February 22nd, 2024, X user @willystaley flagged that Galaxy Gas had begun advertising on the platform with the tagline 'Anytime is Party time!,' a post that pulled over 19,000 likes in six months7.

How It Spread

Discussions about nitrous oxide misuse picked up sharply over summer 2024. On July 17th, 2024, X user @FearedBuck posted 'they really out here hitting whippets like vapes now smh' alongside a clip of a young man hitting a large Galaxy Gas tank in a drive-thru, gathering over 43,000 likes in a month8. In the video, the user answers 'My name Lil T man' (also heard as 'Lil Tae man') in a deep, gas-warped voice, which became the trend's signature audio1.

The format jumped to TikTok in August 2024, where the 'My name Lil T man' clip was turned into a reusable audio. An August 16th, 2024 post from TikToker @therealkyre3 using the sound pulled over 200,000 plays and 19,000 likes in three days, and a similar August 14th video from @babyshiestylivin hit comparable numbers within five days9. On August 17th, 2024, X user @fentanyl posted another clip of a young man hitting a Galaxy Gas tank at a fast food restaurant10, and on August 18th, @scubaryan_ wrote 'they really using whippets like it's vapes out here… this generation is cooked,' which pulled over 35,000 likes in a day11.

Coverage from RapTV and similar aggregators framed the trend as a rise in young men risking permanent brain damage from heavy nitrous use, giving Galaxy Gas Whippets a second life as a news story rather than just a joke1. In the U.K., where nitrous oxide is now a Class C drug, the trend was cited as an American parallel to long-documented misuse there1.

How to Use This Meme

TikTok posts using the trend typically pair footage of someone hitting a Galaxy Gas tank with the 'My name Lil T man' audio, and comments often riff on the deep voice with tags like 'My name Lil T [evil]' or 'My name Lil Tae man [rage]'1. On X, the common convention is a short clip of a user in public, usually at a drive-thru or fast food spot, with a one-line caption calling the behavior generational, like 'hitting whippets like vapes'8.
