Cat In the Hat Serial Killer Trend is an August 2026 AI hoax claiming a knife-wielding figure dressed as Mike Myers from the 2003 Cat In the Hat film was stalking neighborhoods in Ireland and later the U.K. Irish police debunked the sightings within two days, but AI-generated doorbell clips kept the panic bouncing across TikTok and Instagram.

Overview

The trend is built almost entirely from AI-generated images and videos of someone in Mike Myers' furry Cat costume, framed as if captured on Snapchat, Ring cameras, or car dashcams outside suburban homes at night1. Panicked parent posts share space with obvious parodies, and the same porch-light photo grammar shows up across dozens of clips from different accounts7.

The hoax sits downstream of the 'Dark Cat In the Hat Memes' that went viral on TikTok throughout July 2026, which reimagined scenes from the 2003 film through horror and true-crime beats5. Once fake sightings arrived, creators piled on knife-wielding stalker footage, jump scares, and mock news bulletins4.

The first images surfaced on August 18, 2026, allegedly showing a costumed figure at driveways and windows across the Wexford area of Ireland, and a post on the Arklow & Gorey Open Forum Facebook page that same day asked whether anyone else had seen the Snapchats, saying the pictures had 'scared the life out of my kids'5. Redditor FineRecommendation86 reposted the images to r/cork within hours, and TikToker @bainne_maru pushed a reaction video to more than 552,000 views in two weeks1. On August 20, Ireland's Gardaí confirmed the images were AI-generated and no real stalker existed3.

How It Spread

Once debunked, the story only got bigger. Copycat sightings jumped to the U.K. and later the U.S., with British paper The Telegraph covering the trend on TikTok4. An Instagram post from onlinesheffield on August 23 warned about a 'knife-wielding Cat in the Hat' near Sheffield's Meadowhall shopping center, pulling in over 2,300 likes in a week5.

On August 22, TikToker @liannemarie84 uploaded an AI-generated Ring doorbell clip of the Cat holding a paper sign with their name on it, hitting more than 800,000 views in a week2. TikToker @christopherkiely tied the panic to the 2016 creepy clown sightings on August 24, pulling 3.8 million views in a week3. Creator @chudmike posted his own staged clip6, while @tinieramanujam8880 layered a mock news-style version on top of the format8.
