Overview

Gonads And Strife is a Flash animation made by musician and animator Threebrain in 20011. The video stars a jittering squirrel who runs through everything that made him yell 'WEEEEEEE,' including a random guy walking up to him, a gangster thug, R2D2, and a kid in a wheelchair3. The squirrel then tells kids without access to drugs that the fallback plan is to 'hold onto your life, hold onto your little gonads and strife'1.

After that chorus lands, the video cuts into a fast image montage where the words 'gonads' and 'strife' get paired with unrelated pictures like porn star Ron Jeremy and a pile of bunnies1. Fans also know the clip as 'Weeeeeeeee!' after the squirrel's signature yell3. The whole piece runs on the absurdist, no-plot Flash-comedy style that defined a lot of early-2000s web animation.

Threebrain uploaded Gonads And Strife to Albino Blacksheep in 2001, one of the main Flash aggregator sites of the era2. The animation drew heavy traffic on the site through the early 2000s and got tied to the wider catalog of Threebrain's comedic songs and animations1.

How It Spread

By 2004, three years after the original post, the video's momentum began to drop, though a long tail of fans kept sharing it well after the decline started3. On YTMND, users built spinoff pages including a fake Nintendo Wii commercial set to the song4, a JoJo-flavored WRYYY remix5, and a straightforward YTMND page dedicated to the track itself6.

YouTube reuploads and edits kept Gonads And Strife alive once the Flash era wound down. Slowed-down versions and AMVs appeared, along with edits where a word in some other clip got swapped for 'Weee'3. One popular YouTube upload cracked 300,000 views even though it went up during the meme's decline3.

Two offline offshoots also sprang up. A ProBoards forum called Gonads And Strife launched in 2004 as an 18-and-over community for dark fantasy fiction, TV, and movie discussion, and grew past 600 members7. Separately, the Gonads-N-Strife Bike Club, a Nevada charity riding group, formed in late 2000 and picked up the name later8.

How to Use This Meme

Gonads And Strife mostly gets used by quoting 'Weeeeeeee' from the chorus or sharing the original clip as a nostalgia drop from the Flash era1. Remix versions tend to be YTMND parody pages, slowed edits, AMVs, or reupload clips that dub 'Weee' over unrelated animation3. On Urban Dictionary, some fans shorthand the title to 'NADS' when talking about it9.
