Overview

LeBron memes cluster around a few recurring formats. Free-agency jokes hit whenever he's rumored to switch teams, following the template set by #BeforeLeBronDecides in 2014, when fans tweeted absurd events that would supposedly happen 'before LeBron decides'1. Reaction images from playoff losses, especially the wide-eyed LeBron James NBA Finals Reaction from Game 1 of the 2018 Finals, gave posters a go-to face for disbelief3.

Off-court, his 2018 Sprite Cranberry ads, where he pops out from behind furniture to offer the drink, spawned Urban Dictionary entries defining 'pulled a Lebron James' as breaking into a house to hand out Sprite Cranberry4. Older bits like the Lance Stephenson ear-blowing clip from the 2014 Eastern Conference Finals stayed in rotation, especially after the Lakers made the two former antagonists teammates in 20182.

LeBron opened his @KingJames Twitter account in March 2009, and within five years the feed passed 13 million followers3. His run as a viral meme subject really started in summer 2014 free agency, when he opted out of his Miami Heat contract and began meeting with teams1. The first mass-scale LeBron meme moment landed on July 10, 2014, when @SportsNation launched the #BeforeLeBronDecides hashtag inviting fans to tweet impossible events that would happen before LeBron picked a team1.

How It Spread

The #BeforeLeBronDecides hashtag drew more than 100,000 tweets in its first 24 hours per Twitter analytics site Topsy1. Sample replies suggested Bill Murray would agree to Ghostbusters 3 and 4, or Dave Chappelle would revive his show, before LeBron picked a team1. LeBron announced his return to Cleveland the next day.

His July 1, 2018 signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, after two straight Finals losses to the Warriors, kicked off a fresh round of jokes2. NBA Twitter mocked the move by riffing on former Cavs teammate J.R. Smith, whose Game 1 blunder in the 2018 Finals produced the wide-eyed LeBron face that spread as its own reaction image3.

The 2018 Lakers also signed Lance Stephenson, making LeBron and his old ear-blowing tormentor teammates and reviving that clip in the meme cycle2.

How to Use This Meme

The common convention is to pair a LeBron sideline photo with a caption about workplace disbelief or petty betrayals, using the Game 1 J.R. Smith reaction face as the go-to disbelief image3. For hashtag jokes, posters typically pattern replies after #BeforeLeBronDecides, filling in absurd events that would happen before some anticipated decision1.
