Medieval Tapestry Edits, also known as Medieval Macros, are image macros built from historic tapestries and medieval illustrations, plus parodies made with online generators. The format traces back to a 2003 Flash app called the Historic Tale Construction Kit, then exploded on 4chan and later Reddit, where illustrations from the 13th-century Morgan Bible fueled a 2019 wave of dank memes13.

Overview

Medieval Tapestry Edits, or Medieval Macros, cover two overlapping styles. The first pastes stylized Old-English captions onto scanned panels of the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry, letting knights, horses, and Norman soldiers deliver anachronistic punchlines1. The second uses grotesque scenes from illuminated manuscripts, most famously the 13th-century Morgan Bible, as raw material for object-label memes and reaction images3.

The humor leans on the contrast between grave religious or historical imagery and blunt modern captions. Common formats include labeled figures acting out contemporary situations, medieval characters mid-decapitation being tagged as everyday annoyances, and text-heavy tapestry panels styled like the original Latin borders2. Generators like the Historic Tale Construction Kit let anyone stitch a caption and characters into a tapestry-style panel without editing skills2.

In 2002, German students Björn Karnebogen and Gerd Jungbluth from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne built the Historic Tale Construction Kit in Flash. The tool let users drag stylized Bayeux Tapestry figures and Old-English text onto a scrolling canvas, and it went public on May 15, 20031. It was quickly picked up on 4chan, where users turned the generator output into image macros and reaction images6.

The original site went dark around July 2011. A mirror by Johannes Jander kept the app alive, and on September 28, 2015, GitHub users Leonard Allain-Launay, Mathieu Thoretton and Maira released an open-source remake of the kit2.

How It Spread

Alongside the still-frame macros on 4chan, the Bayeux Tapestry inspired a run of YTMND pages that grafted medieval visuals onto site catchphrases, including Medieval WRYYYY, All Thine Castles are Within ovr Possesion, and Medieval PTKFGS6. These pages helped keep the tapestry aesthetic in circulation through the late 2000s.

The format saw a second wind on January 7, 2019, when Redditor ascending_pepe posted a batch of object-label memes built from Morgan Bible illustrations to r/dankmemes. One entry pulled more than 72,600 upvotes within 24 hours3. On the same day, ascending_pepe shared the source images for the illustrations in a Reddit comment so other users could remix them4.

More Morgan Bible edits followed from other posters on r/dankmemes, and ascending_pepe returned on January 8 with a second set of illustrations from the same manuscript5. The Reddit run pushed medieval macros back into mainstream feeds years after the Bayeux-based versions first hit 4chan6.

How to Use This Meme

To make one, people typically start with a public-domain medieval image, a Bayeux panel or a Morgan Bible scene, then add object labels or dialogue that map medieval characters to modern gripes. The Historic Tale Construction Kit remake at htck.github.io covers Bayeux-style panels, while Morgan Bible edits are usually built in a normal image editor using ascending_pepe's shared source images as the base24.
