Medium Waffle is a nonsense phrase coined in December 2017 by Instagram personality and hip hop musician Savage Realm as an in-joke designed to confuse anyone who took it seriously. The two-word gibberish spread through Instagram comment sections and picked up an Urban Dictionary entry within hours, becoming a small but persistent bit of ironic slang built entirely on the joke that it means nothing at all.

Overview

Medium Waffle works as a verbal trap. The phrase carries no real definition, so when someone drops it into a comment thread or replies with it to a direct message, the confusion of the recipient is the entire punchline2. Fans of Savage Realm treat knowing the term as a shibboleth, playing along with the bit that only listeners with an impossibly high IQ can grasp its meaning1.

In practice, the phrase gets used two ways. It shows up as a standalone caption on Instagram photos where it has nothing to do with the image, and it appears as a non sequitur reply to a normal question, functioning as a conversational dead end that leaves the other person unsure whether to laugh or ask for clarification1.

Savage Realm, an Instagram personality and hip hop musician, introduced the phrase on December 19th, 2017 with a post captioned "Medium Waffle everyone" and the follow-up claim that the term is only for the highly intelligent2. The post established both the wording and the joke framing that every later use built on, positioning the phrase as an inside reference rather than a slang term with any actual meaning2.

How It Spread

The same day the original post went up, Urban Dictionary user Bicahel420 submitted a definition entry for "medium waffle" that mirrored the Savage Realm bit, describing it as an extremely high class word that no one can understand unless their IQ matches that of the rapper himself1. The entry included a sample exchange showing the phrase used as a reply to the greeting "Wyd," cementing the non sequitur usage pattern1.

From there, Medium Waffle stayed inside Savage Realm's follower circle on Instagram, appearing in tagged posts under the #mediumwaffle hashtag and in comment sections on accounts connected to him2. A second, unrelated Urban Dictionary entry later reused the same spelling for a crude and completely different definition, a reminder that once a nonsense phrase escapes onto Urban Dictionary anyone can pin any meaning to it1.
