Overview

The series follows Kageyama Shigeo, nicknamed 'Mob', an 8th grader with esper abilities who works part-time under the self-proclaimed psychic Reigen Arataka3. The central hook is Mob's emotion counter, when his suppressed feelings tick up to 100 percent, his powers erupt in explosive sequences that became the source material for countless GIF sets and fanart pieces on pixiv and Tumblr6.

Beyond the psychic fights, the fandom leans into the show's sincerity and Reigen's fraudulent-mentor comedy, with his improvised life-advice speeches circulating as screencap macros3. The manga was well-received on tracking sites too, holding a score of 8.24 on MyAnimeList by December 20154.

ONE, already known online for his self-published One-Punch Man webcomic, began publishing Mob Psycho 100 on Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday Web Comics platform on April 18, 20123. The strip ran as a free digital release and built a quieter but committed following through word of mouth.

On December 1, 2015, an anime adaptation was announced through the Ura Sunday web comic magazine, with Studio Bones set to handle animation for a 2016 broadcast1. Earlier that year, an Ura Sunday reader poll to decide which of its manga should get an anime placed Mob Psycho 100 in second place, foreshadowing the greenlight1.

How It Spread

English-speaking fans were scanlating chapters and sharing panels through Tumblr well before the anime aired, filling the 'mob psycho 100' tag with fan illustrations of Mob and Reigen3. On pixiv, the モブサイコ100 tag passed a thousand illustrations by December 2015, and deviantART hosted over 170 works under the same keyword6. A dedicated subreddit was created on December 1, 2015 right after the anime announcement, pulling in its first wave of subscribers within ten days5.

Promotional videos helped the property spread on YouTube ahead of the adaptation, with an early promo animation getting picked up by fan channels and racking up hundreds of thousands of views over its first two years2. A separate niconico animation reupload also crossed 30,000 views within a year of being posted to YouTube7. A fan-run Mob Psycho 100 Wiki launched on September 2, 2015 and grew past 150 pages in the months around the anime reveal3.
