Picardía, also known as Strawman Ball, Memeball, or Thumbs Up Emoji Man, is a 3D smiley face throwing a thumbs-up that started as an in-joke on Argentinian humor site Taringa in 2014. English-speaking 4chan users picked it up by December 2015, and by the following year the cheerful character had been recolored into templates used to mock every major political ideology.
Overview
In the classic Picardía format, the base yellow smiley is recolored to represent a specific political camp, then captioned with a cartoonish version of that camp's arguments2. The joke lands on the gap between the character's cheerful thumbs-up and the ridiculous positions being put in its mouth, treating the smiley as a walking straw man.
Well-known variants include an anarcho-capitalist version in yellow and black1, a hammer-and-sickle communist recolor, and edits mocking anarcho-communists, national socialists, and MAGA supporters. Each version reads as a self-parody by whoever is being caricatured.
Origin & Background
The underlying character comes from EmotiGuy, an emoji-design app from Daz3D. Argentinian users on humor site Taringa began circulating the smiley with Spanish-language captions in 2014, giving it the nickname 'picardía,' Spanish for mischievous or roguish. An English-language version appeared on 4chan's /int/ board on December 8, 2015, marking its first documented spread outside Taringa3.
