[Press A] to Let Go is a reaction image built from a low-angle Wind Waker screenshot of Link staring up at the camera, with the game's actual button prompt overlaid at the bottom. Reddit user dogHD posted it in April 2014, and a cropped Twitter version pushed it into wider use as a go-to reaction for clingy, cannot-move-on moments.

Overview

The still is a first-person, low-angle shot of Link, the protagonist of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker1, looking straight up at the camera. Overlaid at the bottom is the game's actual button prompt reading "Press [A] to let go," which appears when the player picks Link up in the 2003 GameCube adventure2. The unintended intimacy of that framing, plus the deadpan instruction, is what turned an ordinary gameplay screenshot into a widely used reaction image for clinginess, unrequited attachment, and any situation where letting go feels harder than it should.

Both the wide-angle original and a tighter crop of just Link's face get shared as separate variants of the format, and captions for [Press A] to Let Go typically pair the "let go" prompt with something the poster obviously cannot release, whether that is an ex, a grudge, or a bit they should have dropped ten replies ago.

The [Press A] to Let Go screenshot first surfaced on April 10th, 2014, when Reddit user dogHD posted it to /r/gaming with the caption "A to let go," pulling more than 3,500 upvotes (around 90% upvoted) and roughly 140 comments before the thread was archived3. The image itself is a direct capture from The Wind Waker, the Zelda entry Nintendo released for the GameCube in 2003 and later re-released as a Wii U HD remaster in 20131, so while dogHD is the earliest known poster of the reaction-image framing, no single artist has been credited with inventing the format.

How It Spread

The image moved to the Know Your Meme reaction gallery on June 6th, 2014, when user Gippo Dudee uploaded it there and it slowly pulled around 280 upvotes and 160 favorites over the next two years. The bigger jump came on September 21st, 2014, when a Twitter account posting as @Linkstagram shared a cropped version with the caption "when u accidentally switch to ur front camera," and that tweet pulled roughly 8,600 likes and 6,700 retweets3.

Reddit picked it up a second time on October 11th, 2014, when user JamesMcSam reposted the image to /r/gaming for another 4,100 or so upvotes and about 290 comments before that thread was also archived. By November 2015 the image was being sold on RedBubble merchandise, and it kept resurfacing into 2016: Instagram account nintendotho posted a two-panel joke on March 19th, 2016, and on May 8th, 2016, Reddit user seakladoom reposted the image to /r/BlackPeopleTwitter for more than 6,100 upvotes in the first 24 hours.
