Sad Batman is a Photoshop meme born on May 13th, 2014, when director Zack Snyder tweeted a black-and-white first-look photo of Ben Affleck in the Batman suit on the set of Batman v Superman. The image's mopey vibe kicked off a rush of edits within minutes, spawning the go-to superhero riff on the Sad Keanu format.

Overview

Sad Batman is built around a cutout of Ben Affleck's Batfleck standing next to the new Batmobile, lifted from a grainy black-and-white set photo Zack Snyder posted to Twitter1. The costume's blank stare and slumped posture read as pure gloom, which is exactly the hook editors ran with, pasting the caped crusader into scenes that play up his loneliness or embarrassment.3

The format works like Sad Keanu with a cape. Editors drop Batfleck into random contexts, sitting alone on park benches, moping over cupcakes he cannot eat, showing up at Daredevil premieres, or brooding next to a fellow Sad Keanu.2 Captions lean on faux-pathetic one-liners like "all he wanted was a PS4" or "I don't know who I'm cooking all of these sausages for," and Twitter user LaughingStoic (T.C. Sottek) put out a transparent PNG template so anyone could churn out their own.3

Beyond the loneliness angle, a second joke thread fixated on the suit's bulk, with edits tagging Batfleck as "Fat Batman" and imagining him as a Biggest Loser contestant.4 The humor stays deliberately soft, the kind of goofy fan reaction that piled on before Batman v Superman had even started filming.

The catalyst was a tweet from director Zack Snyder on May 13th, 2014, giving fans their first look at Ben Affleck in the Batman costume beside a redesigned Batmobile on the Batman v Superman set. The photo cleared 44,000 retweets and 24,000 favorites inside 48 hours6.

Earliest known meme: within roughly fifteen minutes of Snyder's post, Twitter user LaughingStoic (a.k.a. Verge writer T.C. Sottek) tweeted an edit that pasted the Sad Keanu cutout into the frame with the caption "why are u so sad batman?"1 About half an hour after that, Twitter user Willhanafin coined the #SadBatman hashtag, which was tweeted more than 1,000 times over the next two days6. LaughingStoic also published a transparent template of the Batfleck cutout so other users could produce their own edits3.

How It Spread

Coverage moved almost as fast as the edits. The Daily Dot published "Why is Ben Affleck such a sad Batman? Here are some answers" the same day the source photo went up, and Blastr followed with a roundup titled "That didn't take long: 'Ben Affleck is Sad Batman' memes already rolling in"2.

On May 14th, 2014, SlashFilm collected the best edits and hosted the LaughingStoic template for readers to grab3. Metro framed the trend as "the newest online craze," pointing at running gags about Affleck's Daredevil past, his friendship with Matt Damon, and cameos from Keanu Reeves in the edits4. Yahoo Movies UK also covered the Batfleck reveal parodies the same day5.

The format lived mostly on Twitter through the #SadBatman tag, where jokes ranged from the melancholy (Batman alone at a diner) to the self-deprecating jabs at the suit's silhouette that got the character rebranded as "Fat Batman" in some edits4. Traffic tapered off once the news cycle moved on, but Sad Batman is still cited as the superhero counterpart to Sad Keanu3.
