Sans Fortnite Dance is a series of animated videos and edits showing the skeleton character Sans from Undertale performing the Default Dance emote from Fortnite. Kicked off in June 2018 by a Twitter clip and expanded a few weeks later into a full animation, it became one of the definitive crossover shitposts of that summer's Fortnite mania.

Overview

Sans Fortnite Dance covers the collection of edits, GIFs and short animations in which Sans, the skeleton judge from Toby Fox's Undertale, performs the Default Dance emote from Fortnite Battle Royale1. The joke plays off two of 2018's biggest fandoms colliding, with Sans's boney frame looping through the emote's exaggerated hip swings, usually set to a remix of his boss theme Megalovania3.

Variations range from clean green-screen renders meant to be dropped into other clips3, to compositing edits that place Sans directly into Fortnite matches or scenes from shows like Family Guy3. The tone is pure shitpost, more absurd than skillful, and the format's staying power comes from how easily anyone with a video editor could jam the skeleton into a new setting.

The earliest known version was posted on June 17, 2018, when Twitter user @Yahiamice shared a clip of a Fortnite character wearing a skeleton costume doing the Default Dance to a Megalovania remix4. About three weeks later, on July 6, 2018, YouTuber bbpanzu uploaded a proper animation of Sans himself performing the Fortnite Default Dance, which pulled more than 29,000 views within two months23.

Toby Fox created Sans as part of Undertale, and Epic Games ships the Default Dance as a Fortnite emote; neither studio was involved in the crossover, which was built entirely by fans remixing both properties3.

How It Spread

The format broke out in late July 2018. On July 24, Twitter user @_palistin_ posted a looping GIF of Sans doing the dance5, and the following day @YungChoclateBar shared a version with the caption "RT to die instantly," which pulled over 2,100 retweets, 2,100 likes and 220,000 views within about six weeks3.

Creators quickly moved from single clips to reusable assets. On July 27, 2018, YouTuber Kyle Scam uploaded a green-screen render designed to be dropped into other footage, which passed 77,000 views in six weeks1. On August 5, YouTuber Kill yo Lol posted an edit compositing Sans directly into a Fortnite match, which cleared 69,000 views in a month3.

By late summer the format spilled into TV mashups. On August 27, 2018, Twitter user @conkface posted a version dropping the dancing Sans into an episode of Family Guy, which pulled more than 6,400 retweets and 16,000 likes in two weeks6.
