Overview

Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. in Long Beach, California, built his career as a G-funk pioneer starting with 1992's "Deep Cover" alongside Dr. Dre and 1993's Doggystyle1. His public love of cannabis and slow, mumbled drawl gave him a second life online as the internet's designated stoner celebrity, and he picked up the nickname "Snoopy" from his mother as a kid because his eyes reminded her of the Peanuts character5.

Memetic formats around him vary widely: YTMND-style loops built around his 2004 single "Drop It Like It's Hot," photoshops pairing him with unlikely famous friends, and Tumblr fan blogs like fuckyeahsnoopdogg and Snoop Dogg Doing Awesome Things that collect stoner reaction pics3. The joke is usually the contrast between his mellow demeanor and whatever absurd context he's dropped into.

Snoop debuted in 1992 on Dr. Dre's "Deep Cover" and released Doggystyle in 1993 under Death Row Records, selling nearly a million copies in its first week1. He started recording as Snoop Doggy Dogg before shortening the name in 1996 when he left Death Row and signed with No Limit Records5.

His first breakout internet meme arrived in October 2006, when YTMND user Barf uploaded a site titled "Snoop Dogg's Dreamland (full song)" that mashed the Gourmet Race theme from Kirby Super Star against the chorus of "Drop It Like It's Hot"3. A November 1, 2006 YouTube reupload of the enhanced follow-up version pulled in more than 3.4 million views in under six years2.

How It Spread

Snoop's memetic footprint spread with him as he claimed online real estate. He registered SnoopDogg.com on July 6, 1998, opened his official Twitter as @snoopdogg on March 30, 2007, and launched his WestFestTV YouTube channel on March 15, 20083. Tumblr fan blogs including fuckyeahsnoopdogg and Snoop Dogg Doing Awesome Things gave the persona a steady image-macro pipeline, while on Reddit he hosted an AMA under the alias "Here_Comes_The_King" and picked up a moderator slot on r/trees.

The persona kept generating fresh viral moments well into his fifties. His hosting run with Martha Stewart during NBC's 2024 Paris Olympics coverage made him one of the standout figures of the games and pushed the pair back into the discourse cycle1. Between the Kirby mashups, the Kurt Cobain photoshop episode and the Olympics reruns, Snoop is still one of the few 1990s rappers whose meme output keeps growing rather than shrinking.

How to Use This Meme

Common Snoop Dogg formats pair his image, voice or drawl with a wildly out-of-place setting: video-game soundtracks (the Kirby mashup being the archetype), photoshops placing him next to other famous figures, or captions written in his signature -izzle cadence. The gag typically leans on his placid, always-smoking demeanor colliding with whatever ridiculous context surrounds him.
