Also known as: AI zombie cat meme · Softhearted Gunner ending · cat zombie embrace meme
Softhearted Gunner is an AI-generated video meme in which a crying character, most famously a tearful orange kitten, aims a gun at a zombie and cannot fire, because the zombie is someone it loves. It lets the zombie attack, and at the moment of impact the clip cuts to the two of them hugging in a warm, sunlit scene. A version posted on X on October 4, 2026 passed 2.4 million views within days and reached Korean and Turkish forums inside 48 hours.
Overview
The joke works because the clip refuses the ending the setup promises. A zombie film tells you the hero shoots. Softhearted Gunner shows the hero crying, lowering the gun, and accepting the attack, then swaps the gore for a hug1. The viral version runs through five quick beats:
1. The standoff: a character points a gun at an approaching zombie. 2. The recognition: the zombie is someone the character loves. 3. The tears: the character cries and cannot pull the trigger. 4. The surrender: the character stops resisting and lets the zombie close in. 5. The embrace: at the moment of contact, the scene cuts to the pair hugging in a bright, peaceful setting.
That final cut is what people remember. The same motion, the zombie reaching the character, reads as a fatal attack in one shot and as affection in the next. Viewers read the sunny scene as a memory, a reunion after death, or just the bond the character refused to break, and the clip never picks one answer.
Tone is the other half. The footage plays the moment completely straight, with slow pacing and tear-streaked close-ups, while the lead is a fluffy kitten. Korean commenters called it a cliché from melodramatic movies2, and that is exactly the appeal: it is obviously over the top, and it still lands. The Pump.fun listing describes the clip as an AI/CapCut format4, which fits how quickly new versions with other characters can be produced.

How to Use This Meme
Remakes typically keep two things: the relationship and the final cut. The common convention is to make it clear early that the zombie is someone the armed character loves, let the tears and hesitation play out, then show the character giving up the fight1. The cut to the happy embrace usually lands right at the moment of contact. Cutting earlier breaks the link between the attack and the hug, and holding on the attack shifts the ending toward horror.
The contrast between the two scenes does most of the work. A dark, threatening standoff followed by a bright, calm setting makes the emotional flip readable without any text. Since the format is described as an AI/CapCut edit4, creators often swap in their own characters, pets or objects instead of the original cat.
Captions often name the relationship or turn the over-the-top loyalty into an everyday joke:
- "When the apocalypse expects you to forget who raised you." - "He still sees his best friend." - "Me going back to the game that ruined my sleep schedule." - "Me and the group project partner I keep forgiving."
Short captions tend to work best. Viewers need to know who matters to the character before the final hug shows how much.
