In December 2018, IGN debuted a teaser poster for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film that showed a strangely muscular silhouette of the blue speedster. Within hours, Twitter, Reddit and DeviantArt users were photoshopping the image with Gritty faces, Ugandan Knuckles and Golden Gate Bridge crotch shots, kicking off one of the loudest pre-release pile-ons of the year.

Overview

Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Poster Parodies are a run of Photoshops, redraws and staged photos that riff on the two teaser posters IGN and other outlets shared for the 2019 live-action Sonic film. The first poster was an animated silhouette that gave Sonic a beefy human physique, and the second placed his legs straddling the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco6.

The format is loose: swap Sonic's face for another dead-eyed mascot such as Gritty2, flip the pose to show what his 'back' might look like3, or drop a different Sonic-adjacent character like Ugandan Knuckles into the same lighting4. For the second poster, the joke shifted to physical reenactments and further Photoshops that leaned into how anatomically odd the silhouette looked from that angle7.

The catalyst was IGN's December 10th, 2018 Instagram post of the first Sonic the Hedgehog teaser poster, which used light animation to reveal a muscular, decidedly non-cartoon silhouette of the character. The post pulled roughly 27,000 likes and 147,000 views in its first 24 hours1.

Meme-format emergence followed within hours on the same day. Twitter user @stevezaragoza posted a doctored version that pasted Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty's face over Sonic's, with the caption 'look at what happens when you brighten sonic's face on the Sonic the Hedgehog poster,' and racked up more than 8,600 retweets and 38,000 likes in two days2.

How It Spread

The parodies moved across platforms fast. On December 10th, 2018, Twitter user @myanimewaifu drew a mock-up of what Sonic's 'back' might look like given the new silhouette, gathering more than 2,200 retweets and 9,700 likes in two days3. That same day, DeviantArt user jazzjack-KHT swapped Sonic out for Ugandan Knuckles in the same pose4, and Redditor Jake5713 cross-posted that image to r/TwoBestFriendsPlay the next day for roughly 865 points at 96% upvoted5.

On December 11th, 2018, a second rumored poster surfaced when Twitter user @ThatCubeGamer shared it with the caption 'this can't be real this can't be real this can't be real.' It showed Sonic's legs planted on the Golden Gate Bridge and hit more than 9,500 retweets and 35,000 likes inside 24 hours6. Game Grumps co-founder Arin Hanson (@egoraptor) then posted a physical recreation attempt that earned over 1,900 retweets and 18,000 likes in a day, sparking a run of copycat photos and edits7.

Mainstream coverage picked up quickly. Forbes ran a piece the same week collecting reactions from original Sonic staff including Naoto Ohshima, Yuji Naka, Shiro Maekawa and Sonic Unleashed character designer Gurihiru8. Know Your Meme documented the parody wave as an entry that same month9.
