SpongeBob "I Fucking Love X" is a 2021 recaption meme built on an Impact-font image of the cartoon screaming an infamous line about loving war. Posters swap out "War" for anything from Metal Gear to walking fast, keeping the shock-value setup intact. Also called the SpongeBob Screaming Meme, it broke out through Instagram edits and a viral r/196 crosspost in late 2021 and early 2022.

Overview

SpongeBob "I Fucking Love X" is a recaption format built around an Impact-font image of SpongeBob SquarePants screaming with the original bottom text reading "I Fucking Love War I Want To Fucking Kill People For Money And Destroy Cultures And History"1. Posters swap out "War" and the follow-up clause to declare over-the-top devotion to whatever noun, franchise, or ideology they want to riff on. The template's shock-value language paired with a childhood cartoon character is what gave the joke its immediate contrast humor.

Also called the SpongeBob Screaming Meme or SpongeBob Yelling, the format sits in the same lineage as earlier phrasal templates like "I Fucking Love Cocaine" and "I Love Lean," which share the same aggressive-affirmation structure3. The same screaming SpongeBob screencap had already been used in the "He Don't Miss" recaption format before this version took over.

How to Use This Meme

The template typically keeps SpongeBob's screaming top caption intact while replacing "War" and the following clause with a chosen subject. Common convention is to keep the "I Fucking Love X" opener and add a mock-earnest justification below, often escalating into absurd, self-deprecating, or fandom-specific territory like Metal Gear or political compasses2.
