Swole Doge
Also known as: Chad Doge · Buff Doge
Swole Doge is an edited image of the Doge Shiba Inu with an extremely muscular human body, first posted to Reddit's r/dogelore in July 20191. The edit quickly spread across Doge meme communities on Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit, and by 2020 it became one half of the hugely popular "Swole Doge vs. Cheems" comparison template used to contrast a strong, idealized past with a weak, diminished present2.
Overview
Swole Doge takes the familiar Doge Shiba Inu head and photoshops it onto a hyper-muscular anthropomorphic dog body. The character radiates confidence, strength, and superiority. On its own, Swole Doge appeared in "How Could You Tell" memes and general flex-style jokes3. But its biggest role came when it got paired with Cheems, a smaller, sadder Shiba Inu, in the "Swole Doge vs. Cheems" format. In that two-panel template, Swole Doge represents something strong, capable, or admirable, while Cheems represents the weaker, more pathetic modern equivalent2.
On July 7, 2019, Reddit user purnya232 posted the first known Swole Doge image to r/dogelore3. The post showed Doge's head on a ripped anthropomorphic dog body and pulled in over 7,400 upvotes with a 99% approval rate within six months3. The very next day, Facebook page Doge Dad reposted a cropped version, picking up over 120 likes3. Within the same week, Instagram page yourfrienddoge started churning out memes with the character, with one July 10 post earning more than 11,100 likes3.

How to Use This Meme
The standard Swole Doge vs. Cheems format works as a two-panel comparison:
Pick two versions of the same thing, one "strong" and one "weak." This usually means past vs. present, ideal vs. reality, or expectation vs. outcome.
Label Swole Doge (left panel) with the impressive, capable version. Text typically appears bold and direct.
Label Cheems (right panel) with the diminished, struggling version. Cheems dialogue often includes the letter "m" inserted into words (like "hamsburger" instead of "hamburger") to signal his speech impediment.
The comparison is usually ironic or exaggerated for comedic effect.
