It expresses the discomfort of revisiting a piece of beloved old media and discovering that it is offensive or worse than remembered. The specific subject can be a 90s movie, a flash game or something more pointed like a political document.

How do you use The 90s Sucked?

Posters typically crop the comic to the character's horrified reactions and add a top caption naming what they are revisiting. Some edit the final speech bubble to include a product logo, as @ssundeefan1738 did with Kick the Buddy.

Gross, That Was Really Sexist began as a 2015 Tumblr webcomic by artist Dublah, in which a woman queues up a beloved 1990s Netflix movie and keeps finding slurs she had never clocked as a kid. Nearly a decade later, X users turned the strip into a reaction template for revisiting embarrassing media, with early 2025 captions covering everything from Air Bud to the Nixon tapes.

Overview

Gross, That Was Really Sexist, better known as The 90s Sucked, is a four-panel webcomic by Tumblr artist Dublah showing a woman who starts a childhood favorite movie on Netflix, then slowly realizes it is sexist, racist, homophobic and transphobic before concluding, 'The 90s sucked'1. On X the strip is cropped and recaptioned to describe anything the poster has recently revisited and found to be worse than they remembered, from old video games to political recordings3.

Most posts use the horrified middle panels and attach a new caption at the top, so the character's facial progression carries the joke. A smaller variant replaces the final 'The 90s sucked' speech bubble with a product or game logo, pinning the format to a specific target12. The humor usually depends on the subject being either innocuous nostalgia (Air Bud, a flash game) or something no reasonable person would defend (Mein Kampf, Birth of a Nation), making the shocked faces either absurd overreaction or appropriate alarm9 11.

2015

On March 7, 2015, artist Dublah posted the four-panel comic to Tumblr under the title 'Ohh, 90s movies'1. The archived version collected over 41,000 notes before the account was deactivated3. A repost by Tumblr user nopeimnottellingyou kept the strip circulating after Dublah's account went down.

The modern meme template, cropped to just the discovery sequence, was first used on October 14, 2024, when X user @Krazyman50Real captioned it 'Replaying Satcherzbop in 2024'6, a reference to a Geometry Dash custom level filled with racial slurs documented on YouTube7. Dublah created the comic; @Krazyman50Real is the earliest known poster to use it as a reaction template rather than share the full strip.

How It Spread

The comic made the rounds on Reddit well before it was templatized. It was reposted to r/ComedyCemetery on June 18, 20172 and to r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns on December 7, 20204. On April 2, 2022, X account @Internet_TLCM (The Left Can't Meme) shared the full strip with the caption 'I love the 90's,' pulling in over 6,100 likes5.

The reaction-template form took off in early 2025. On January 8, 2025, @Spacecadetnixon posted the cropped panels with the caption 'How it feels to listen to your childhood favourite parts of the Nixon tapes'8, collecting more than 20,000 likes in five days. Later that day, @nudeobama applied the same template to Air Bud and attracted over 3,300 likes9.

On January 9, @Eater_of_Coal captioned a version 'How it feels to read Mein Kampf,' which got more than 4,700 likes10. @da_porgy followed on January 10 with 'Watching Birth of a Nation again,' picking up over 4,400 likes11. The biggest post in the run came on January 12, 2025, when @ssundeefan1738 edited the Kick the Buddy logo into the final speech bubble and captioned it 'Playing kick the buddy in 2025,' attracting more than 63,000 likes within a day12.

How to Use This Meme

Users typically crop the comic down to the four shocked-reaction panels and attach a top caption explaining what the character is actually revisiting. Common conventions include naming a specific piece of childhood media (a 90s or 2000s game, a sports movie), a political document or recording, or a notoriously offensive text. A less common edit replaces the final 'The 90s sucked' speech bubble with a logo belonging to the thing being roasted12.
