Overview

The Interrogation of Stephen McDaniel is a photoshop meme originating from real police interrogation footage of convicted murderer Stephen McDaniel. The meme focuses on the absurdly reclined posture of the Macon Police Department interrogator, who appears to be leaning so far back in his chair that it looks like the furniture is under extreme strain2.

The visual comedy comes from the stark contrast between the serious subject matter and the interrogator's casual body language. 4chan users latched onto this juxtaposition, creating various edits that exaggerate or recontextualize the scene. Popular formats include replacing the figures with Pepe and Wojak, making the interrogator appear to do sit-ups, and editing him into absurd situations like playing Twister3.

The source footage comes from the real interrogation of Stephen McDaniel, who murdered Lauren Giddings on June 26th, 2011 in Macon, Georgia1. McDaniel strangled Giddings and dismembered her body with a hacksaw before hiding the remains in a nearby park. Police arrested him during an unrelated burglary investigation and brought him in for questioning.

The Macon Police Department uploaded the full interrogation video to YouTube on June 11th, 20152. While the footage initially circulated among true crime communities, it wasn't until years later that the interrogator's unusual posture caught the attention of meme creators.

How It Spread

The meme's first appearance on 4chan came on August 1st, 2016, when a clip of McDaniel's live television reaction to learning police found body parts was posted to the /tv/ board2. However, the photoshop trend didn't begin until April 2018, when a /tv/ user posted a greentext story mocking how the interrogator's chair seemed ready to collapse under the strain of his reclined position3.

The meme gained real momentum in April 2019 when another /tv/ thread featured a sarcastic "cinematography" discussion about the footage. This sparked the first Pepe and Wojak edit, with the interrogator as Pepe and McDaniel as Wojak4. Over the following months, users created increasingly elaborate photoshops including animated GIFs showing the interrogator doing sit-ups and edits placing him in Twister poses3.

The Interrogation of Stephen McDaniel became a recurring fixture on 4chan's /tv/ board, with the interrogator's Southern accent also becoming a target for mockery in the edits3.
