Overview

Torture Dance refers to a sequence from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind in which gang members Narancia, Mista, and Fugo break into a synchronized hip hop dance while torturing the detached head of the enemy Zucchero. The clip is defined by its mix of goofy choreography, graphic violence, and surreal visuals of the decapitated head drying in the sun2.

The meme format centers on swapping the audio of the dance footage with other songs, with fans cutting the sequence to hip hop tracks, lo-fi beats, and viral meme audio. Real-life recreations and crossover edits placing the dance into other anime series also became common formats3. The scene stood out to fans for its mix of over-the-top violence with the dance's silly moves3.

The scene was first drawn by Hirohiko Araki in chapter 462 of the Vento Aureo manga, published in 1995, in which Narancia, Mista, and Fugo stick fish hooks through Zucchero's eyelid and dance to a hip hop song playing on a radio3. The sequence sat as a cult-favorite manga moment for over two decades before being animated.

YouTube music swaps of the manga panels appeared years before the anime adaptation. On October 30th, 2016, YouTuber LordGriddlez uploaded an edit of the cropped manga characters dancing to "You reposted in the wrong neighbourhood" by ＳＨＯＫＫ青, which passed 800,000 views1. Around the same time, user Noza Joza paired footage from the video game JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven with Nujabes' "World End Rhapsody"4, while user Pivot's own "wrong neighbourhood" edit from January 18th, 2017 cleared 1.5 million views5.

How It Spread

The animated version aired as Episode 7 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind on November 16th, 2018, and the dance sequence was covered by Comicbook.com the same day2. Fans had been waiting on this specific scene for years, and the David Production adaptation sparked an immediate wave of edits2.

YouTuber Riverdude Covers posted a real-life recreation on the day the episode aired, pulling over 100,000 views6. Sir Kriegon followed with a music edit of the animated footage that drew more than 7,000 views7. Two days later on November 18th, user keye necktire dropped the dance's audio into a scene from Hunter x Hunter8, while user xForts posted a long-form analysis of the sequence that climbed past 50,000 views9.

Pivot, whose 2017 manga edit had been one of the earliest viral versions, returned with a sequel titled "you gang'ed in the wrong repost" using the new anime footage. The follow-up pulled more than 400,000 views in under four days10, confirming that the meme's second wave built directly on the pre-anime YouTube scene it had been incubating in3.
